Q. Why do I need an iTunes account with my iPad? A. iTunes is essential for any Apple product. It is the way you ‘keep in touch’ with Apple, for want of a better term. Its name is deceiving, as it is about a whole lot more than just music. Anything you want to buy or download from Apple, especially apps (applications – remember, those little software parcels?) for your iPad. Even if you want to download one of the many free apps, you still need to sign up to an Apple account first. Q. How easy is it to buy apps? A. First of all, it helps if you know what you are looking for. The iTunes app store is divided into categories such as entertainment, education, productivity and games. The games category is so large it is further subdivided into game type. If you have no clue what you want to buy, you are going to have to scroll through 1,000’s of apps so do your research. Assuming you’ve narrowed your choice down to a few, take careful note of any online review, and particularly at the star rating attached to the app. These are generated by users and offer a good reflection on the app. Payment is by credit / debit card. However, if you don’t have either of these don’t worry. You can buy iTunes Gift Cards from Apple Stores and major retailers. Q. What else can I do on iTunes? A. iTunes is a really good all round interface. You can buy movies from the Apple Store and watch them in MP4 format. It also allows you to hear podcasts, radio stations and watch TV programs. You can move all you music over to iTunes and it will create play lists for you. It also has a “Genius” facility that recognises the kind of music you listen to most and will generate a list of recommendations for you. It’s well worth having!
