iPad FAQ: How to turn off in-app purchases

As most of us would be aware, apart from purchasing apps from the Apple app store you can also purchase certain items from within a particular app. These purchases are known as ‘in-app’ purchases. This is a very clever way by which developers of apps make money. They make you want something really bad and then charge you for it. If you have children and you often use your iPad for different games then you need to be extra careful. With the excitement and fun involved with playing games children often tend to go on a shopping spree when it comes to in-app purchases. Power-ups and the likes will help your children advance through games and they will leave no stone unturned to go ahead, even if it involves running a silly number bill on card credit card. Of course, children should be allowed to play games (it’s good for them) but it should be through skill/perseverance and not by paying money to iTunes.

It is essential you put some form of limiting feature which will prevent misuse of In-app purchases as this can seriously add numbers to your expenditure. One nice way of doing so is simply switching the feature off. How do you do so? Read on.

Go to the settings icon on your home screen, tap on it and go into the General section.
Next, tap on Restrictions which is on the right hand side.
If you already haven’t done so you can enable restrictions using the bar present on the top right. Remember, you will have to enter a four digit passcode to get these into place.
Once you have enable restrictions you will notice that the first entry of the third section reads ‘In-App Purchases’ present under the Allowed Content section. At default it is set to ‘on’. Tap on it to switch it off.

That’s it. In-App purchases are no longer available. You kids may not like it but then it will help in improving their thinking abilities. Of course, you can allow one or two In-app purchases for special occasions.
