The next thing you need to know about multitasking is: Controlling Playback, Brightness, Screen Rotation Lock and Volume One of the coolest features of multitasking which the iOS 4.2 update brought to the iPad is the ability to control various features. You no longer need to go to the settings app to change the settings for Brightness, Screen Rotation Lock, or Volume. Also, the physical screen lock button can now be used as a mute button and can be really useful to control the iPod app, AirPlay, Pandora and several other applications. It saves you time as you no longer need to switch between different application. Want to learn about how to use these new cool features? Read on. Simply tap on the home button twice as mentioned in the previous part of this series and the display shifts up revealing apps which are running in the background. You can scroll left or right to see all the different apps which are running. However, if you scroll completely to the left you will notice a bar full of cool controls. The left most control on the screen is the Screen Rotation Lock. On tapping it once, it locks the screen in the orientation you are holding the iPad in. Tap it again to unlock rotation. Second from the left is the slider for controlling brightness of your iPad. As mentioned before, you no longer need to make a trip to the settings app to change this. Third from the left are the controls for playback such as play, pause, forward. Second from the right is probably an unnecessary control for volume control. This is mainly because there are already physical buttons on the iPad which will control volume. This space could have been better utilized for some other purpose. The right most icon is for the application you can control using the playback controls. Tapping on the icon will open the applications. Closing applications running in the background using Multitasking Sometimes if you have kept several applications open then you may find that your iPad starts running a bit slow. This is because there is a limited amount of RAM and most of the memory gets utilized. To get your iPad back to normal you may have to close some applications which you are not using.

To do this first open the open the list of applications running in the background by double tapping the home button.

Once the row of icons appears, you can tap and hold on to any of the icons. After a few seconds of holding the icon you will notice small ‘x’s’ appearing on each of the icons.

Release the icon and tap on the ‘x’ of whichever application you want to close.

Once you are done closing all the applications you are not using, press the home button once and you will return to the Home screen or the app you were using.

That’s it; your iPad will feel much faster and smoother without any performance lags. Enjoy the world of multitasking on your iPad!
