Other iPad editions of print and paper newspapers rely on advertising to make their revenue. Not so with The Times, which carries a renewable monthly subscription. The Times of London is one of the very few iPad newspaper apps offering a daily edition, so for the price of $16.99 per month you’re getting a lot of copy. I’ve read a couple of rumblings by customers complaining that there’s no newspaper on Sundays. This is because The Sunday Times is an entirely different entity and is not produced by the same people as the weekly edition of The Times.

The Times of London app offers you the full breadth of coverage found in its print edition. There are a number of ways to read the iPad newspaper. You can scroll through page by page as you would with a regular newspaper, or you can touch headlines to jump straight to the story of your choice. The Times’ layout includes daily Opinion columns, commentaries on issues of the day as well as feature articles. Articles can be toggled on the same page in sections such as Letters, Opinion and Obituaries. Feature articles contain not only the single photo images available in the print edition but a complete scrollable gallery. Alongside still images, videos are also available in places. Navigation is made even simpler by use of the navigation bar that can be brought up at the bottom of the screen, and The Times makes full use of the iPad’s landscape or portrait modes.

The Times of London is a newspaper of historical prestige and journalistic excellence. Its foray into the contemporary field of subscription mobile device applications see it retain its intellectual integrity whilst at the same time create appeal to a whole new readership.

The Times of London is available for $16.99 per month from iTunes: http://itunes.apple.com/app/id=374015721#
