Without trying to plug an extra piece of kit during this review, Note Taker HD really takes off if you use it with a decent stylus. You can of course use your finger, but after leaving kindergarten most of us are more familiar with writing using a pen. There are two main ways to write your text to Note Taker HD. The first is directly onto the single screen document where your writing will be as small as you can make it. This is very tricky since inevitably your writing will be fairly large as you scribble down notes at speed. In this mode you have the option to pinch zoom in and out of the page area, but this can be a time-consuming headache. This full screen mode is best when you want to include sketch diagrams and drawings as it gives you more screen real estate with which to work. The second way to input your writing is using the split screen facility. This mode takes some getting used to, but once you’re proficient its comprehensive functionality really makes Note Taker HD stand out above its competitors. Features such as margin control, moveable text box, automatic or manual scrolling for continuous text input, color change, screen positioning, undo to erase mistakes, all make your personalised notes exactly as you’d have them if you were using pen and paper. The obvious advantage of using Note Taker HD over traditional pen and paper is this app will store all of your notes in an orderly way, making them easy to retrieve and view. The database of notes is searchable via thumbnails or titles, and each note can be edited. Notes can be sent as single jpg images as well as multipage PDF files, meaning you can email them to yourself and print them if required. Note Taker HD is so crammed full of useful functionality, it’s impossible to describe its versatility in one app review. Of its kind, Note Taker HD must be the best annotating app available for iPad right now. With regular updates available, this app can only go from strength to strength. Note Taker HD is available for $4.99 from iTunes: http://itunes.apple.com/app/id=366572045#
