Knot Guide HD lists over 95 knots that are sorted into searchable categories such as climbing knots, hitches and loops. The latest update ensures that knots with several names are found using the search. For example, a search for ‘reef knot’ and ‘square knot’ will bring you to the same description.

Using Knot Guide HD is simple. First select your knot directly by name or via category search. A full description of the knot will appear including its general use, ensuring you have chosen the correct knot for the correct task. Next, follow the large graphics of the knot-tying process. This is a swipe-through operation that takes you through the tying stage by stage. If you need to go back a stage you can. The graphics are extremely clear and include arrows to show you the exact direction and location of the next tie. As Knot Guide HD contains a multitude of knots for a host of situations, you can easily save a list of those you most commonly use, stopping you having to search each time. You can also keep individual notes on each knot, which is a nice touch.

The breadth of information held in this app is astonishing. From simple knots used for attaching trailers to your truck, through to intricate decorative knots used in jewellery-making, Knot Guide HD seems list them all. I have yet to find a situation where a knot is needed that Know Guide HD doesn’t provide. This is a straight-forward and basic app, well-conceived and easy to use.
