The iPad version of Groovemaker takes the original iPhone release a stage higher. Making full use of the iPad’s larger interactive screen, Groovemaker offers you a mixer-like environment with large slider controls for volume, pan and master level of the 8 controllable loop tracks as well as more immediate track controls such as tempo, solo, mute, etc… all available from the same screen. “Songs” in Groovemaker-speak are the audio loops that you choose from in the open screen of this app. These are arranged into instrument groupings such as percussion and bass, and allow you to combine them in limitless combinations. The great thing is you can carry on creating your sounds whilst the music plays, so the whole process is seamless. On the mixing screen there are 8 track pads. A great way to get the hang of mixing is to start with a ‘Random Mix’. The Groovemaker will generate an 8 bar looping track for you to play with. Keep loading a random mix until you find one you like, and then save it to work on later. More advanced functions all appear on the main screen above the 8 track pads. You can work on several tracks at the same time by bringing up controls for your mixes via taps to the track slider. There is a mass of resources available on Groovemaker for your professional-style mix-making. Pan, volume, mute, solo, group, tempo are all at your fingertips to manipulate each track. There is a huge library of loops available, the exact number depending on which version you have purchased: drums, bass, bass-drums, lines, pads, percussion and effects. You can save, preview, recall and remix your tracks. And you can upload your mixes as WAV files using the iPad’s WiFi or 3G functionality. One of the great features of Groovemaker is that all the samples and loops are royalty-free so you can use them where-ever and whenever you wish. This app is a Hip Hop lover’s dream. There is a free version, offering you 120 loops with a mix of house and hip-hop. The frugally priced full version is available at $9.99. This gives you 300 loops with the addition of an R’n’B mix.
