The Gulf of Mexico is particularly prone to hurricane activity at this time of year. With the seas reaching the critical temperature of 79F, and the increased instability of saturated oceanic air, all a deep depression needs to trigger a hurricane is the added twist of the earth’s spin. Hurricane HD lists all current hurricane-level storms in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Tap on an active storm to view its current position, bring up readings for wind speed, storm movement speed, locational coordinates and air pressure, and follow its projected path. This is essential if the weather service anticipates that the storm will hit land. Of course, you have to be online to receive these updates. Satellite imagery is sometimes a little ‘off’, occasionally showing you just half the storm. The radar images on the other hand are excellent if the hurricane is anywhere near land; you can see the storm moving in real time. Hurricane HD is a must for anyone interested in weather and climate. It is also essential for students of Physical Geography, GIS, Satellite Remote Sensing and Meteorology. It contains a large database providing extensive information of previous hurricanes right back to 1851 (Atlantic) and 1949 (Pacific). You can make an in-depth study of previous storms, following their path from birth to dissipation, alongside their individual behaviors linked to prevailing weather and oceanic conditions. That’s a whole lot of useful stuff for meteorologists everywhere and enough to wet the shorts of any geographical-based college student.
