Audubon Birds field guide app is of particular interest to ornithologists or anyone with a liking for birds. My grandparents used to take great trouble in placing food on a bird table outside their dining room window, and again as a child I remember my grandfather pointing out all the different species that would feed there, including parakeets believe it or not (they were a flock of escapees who’d survived and flourished). Unfortunately you won’t find parakeets listed in the guide, which is no wonder as they are not native to North America. They’re actually from the Indian foothills of the Himalayas! Alongside an intricate search engine covering features such as flight style, size, color, region and seasonality, Audubon Birds has a wonderful sound library of over 2,500 bird songs. Matching bird song with the physical characteristics and regional/seasonal probability should give you an almost perfect identification of any bird you may spot. Keeping track of your observations is easy with the app’s in-built listing functions which will automatically geo-locate the position of the sighting if you’re using your iPad in the field. Although Audubon Birds is also available on the iPhone, the iPad version is better to use simply due to its increased screen size and better quality imaging. The downside of the iPad version is, of course, that it’s easier to take your iPhone with you into the field. Since this is a universal app, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t download it to both devices if you have them, and take with you whichever device is appropriate for your trip outdoors. Audubon Birds is expensive, but it’s an informative and well-presented app. From bird-spotting from your dining room window to a full-on expedition in the field, this is the app to take. Audubon Birds is available for $19.99 from iTunes: http://itunes.apple.com/app/id=333227386#
