iPad App Review: The new Newsy app for iPad is a real hit

The home screen lists all the most recent videos. Simply scroll through until you find the one that interests you and touch – off it goes. There is a menu choice available so you can bring up stories that most interest you, eg Environment or Politics. Newsy can be viewed in both Landscape and Portrait mode. If you decide to use the Portrait view, you can cluster all the videos you want to watch by dragging their icons to the empty box at the bottom. Pressing ‘play all’ does exactly what it says, streaming one after the next. Sharing any video is easy as there is a built in facility to post it via Twitter or Facebook. You can view a transcript of the video as it plays, and leave any juicy comments you may have whilst it is still in motion. This is a great app for getting your daily news from more than one point of view. A search facility at the top of the screen allows you to search the entire database, not just the most recent stories, to get full coverage of your chosen topic. There is a slight bug about which the developers are already aware. Occasionally, or should I say “very rarely” a video may stop and the app will crash. The solution to this is to exit the app by restarting your iPad. This remedies the situation. A patch should soon be available to fix this little glitch, but for a free app with such scope, it’s a small price to pay!
