iPad App Review: Photogene

The interface and layout of Photogene is planned well and also very user friendly. You do not have to be a photography expert nor a technological genius to use the app. You get your main editing options running along the bottom of the screen, and when you select a certain one you will get more detailed adjustments viewable on the side of the screen. At first glance, the minimalist layout is quite good because it allows you to view the photo without too much clutter in the way so you can really observe how you want to edit it and what needs to change.
Photogene makes great use of the iPad's touch-screen capabilities with many of its functions. For example, you can use pinching and zooming gestures to resize photos with ease. Cropping them is quite easy too, and using your finger to perform such functions is much easier than using a mouse on a computer.

The app comes loaded with tons of editing options that should satisfy even the most demanding photo editor. You get a wide range of color adjustments, and you can also add special effects to photos such as reflections and more. You have the option to add in different frames, sharpen photos, apply filters such as blur, and choose between one of thirteen different text bubbles. Photogene even comes with fourteen different preset macros to help you transform photos with hardly any work at all. You can also create and save your own macros too to save time. If you happen to mess up or make mistakes while editing, which is quite common, you can undo and redo functions as many times as you like. Once you are done editing a photo, Photogene also lets you share it with others via social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook, or you can just email it to them. For all of the great features it has, one would expect Photogene to cost a pretty penny. Luckily, it goes for the bargain price of $4 from the iTunes App Store. For that price, this is one must-have app, particularly if you are heavy into photography.
