iPad App Review: NFL Sunday Ticket Not So Free

The first thing to mention about NFL Sunday Ticket for the iPad is that it only covers Sunday afternoon games. All other games including Sunday Nighters are not included in this app. I don’t quite understand this: what’s the difference between streaming matches on an afternoon and an evening? All the games for any particular Sunday afternoon are listed, including start times. Matches already in progress migrate to the top of the list. An interesting feature is the ability to catch all the ‘red zone’ action. If you’re not watching your favorite team then you can set the app to jump between games when the match play gets into the red zone, like showing you your own personal highlights. There are other viewing parameters and options, all applicable to what is essentially a streaming TV app. The problem with NFL Sunday Ticket is that it’s a TV app that doesn’t work perfectly. The app is slow to fire up, and switching between matches always causes a juddering screen lag. The action kicks in after a couple of seconds, but remains a little pixelated for some time afterwards. And are the broadcasts sent in HD to make use of the iPad’s HD capacity? It may be broadcast in HD but images don’t seem to be received that way. Perhaps something happens to the signal way up in the clouds… I may be sounding picky, and as a free app I shouldn’t complain. However, I don’t really believe that this is a free app, since you must also be a subscriber to use it. Paying $100’s per year to enjoy live NFL coverage, I would expect a lot more from their iPad app. NFL Sunday Ticket is available FREE from iTunes: http://itunes.apple.com/app/id=390577714#
