iPad App Review: MotionX GPS HD

MotionX GPS released this particular app previously for the iPhone. This new HD version of the app, however, was made specifically with the iPad in mind. With more processing power and a larger screen, the iPad and MotionX GPS HD are a match made in heaven. No matter what type of traveler or explorer you are, this is one app that can fit in wherever you take it and will suffice for whatever you're doing. You could be driving in your family sedan, off-roading on an ATV like a wild man, walking around with the hordes of tourists in Times Square, on an airplane, or hiking in your boots, and it does not matter. MotionX GPS HD works well in all those described scenarios. You can use the app with either the Wi-Fi or 3G version of the iPad, although the 3G is obviously better suited for it. With 3G, you can be on foot and not have to worry about losing your internet connection. This allows you to use the app in conjunction with Google Maps from anywhere in the world. If you don't have the 3G version, however, you can download maps from MotionX that will work when you are offline. Best of all, the MotionX maps can be saved and are free.

You can view maps in different modes, such as street, terrain, hybrid, or satellite view. You can also save specific waypoints on the map to plot your favorite and most visited locations. Rather than being just a GPS, MotionX lets you add a personal touch to the navigational experience. There is also a geocoding function that can help you if you are lost. With this function, you can request the GPS to give you the nearest physical address to your current location. This allows you to notify someone of where to go if you need help. A nice compass is also onboard, and you can track your progress live, as well as be given an estimated time of arrival at your current pace. MotionX GPS HD costs just $2.99 to download. If you are big on traveling, this app is a great tool to have on the iPad. It combines functionality with fun, and provides almost any navigational tool one would want from a GPS app.
