iPad App Review: GarageBand

For $4.99, GarageBand will allow you to record 8 different tracks of recorded audio or software instruments as well as add effects, mix your levels and also apply stompboxes and amps to your tracks. You will be able to create your own playable instruments, sample audio and use a library full of preset loops. The first thing about GarageBand which will impress you is the interface and layout of this app. You will definitely praise Apple for the thoughtfulness that has gone into this app. It doesn’t look like a watered down version of some computer software but instead looks like something that has been developed from scratch for the iPad. Recording pieces and creating tracks are really easy. The software instruments provide you with a large number of options for the purpose of sound creation and manipulation. Apart from the usual pianos, drum kits and guitars you also get other instruments known as Smart Instruments (I am pretty sure they will be known as ‘iInstruments’). These smart instruments work differently than standard ones. For example if you use the one for the guitar you will given the neck of a guitar with preloaded chords instead of individual frets. The sound which comes out actually resembles a real guitar. In fact if you really aren’t musically inclined you will be able to get the app play the guitar for you while you select which chords you want it to play. However, there is one option missing. Users cannot load their own chords but this will probably be added in future versions. Apart from the guitar smart instrument you also have these available for the piano and the drums. Let’s look at the smart instrument for the drums. You will be able to mix and match drum patterns on a grid which have volume/pattern on its x/y axis. By simply dragging and dropping drum components such as hi-hats, snares etc you can create your own drum rhythm. Once again here you have the lack of user loadable patterns which as mentioned before will probably be added in the future.

You also have the pattern mode. You can make complete songs by drawing out and sequencing using eight different tracks. You may find using the pattern mode a bit complicated at the start but once you get used to it you will probably be nominated for a Grammy. However, you do not get the option to edit specific note data instead you can only re-record a part. There are some bugs with GarageBand most noticeably system-stalling crashes which require your iPad to reboot. We are pretty sure Apple will flatten these bugs out soon. One interesting thing to note here is that GarageBand may function better on the iPad 2 because of the double core A5 processor however the difference is yet to be seen. Overall this app for your iPad is amazing and revolutionary in its genre (much like many Apple products). It is definitely a must buy.
