iPad App Review: FileBrowser |

Let us take the case of a Mac. You need to first enable file sharing on your Mac after which this app on your iPad should be able to see your computer on a local network. Unfortunately, automatic discovery is not available so instead you can easily add a new computer by typing (in the Name/Address filed) ‘username.local’. Here, the username is the actual username of your computer. By connecting to an AirPort Extreme station or by recognising the folders you have set to be shared, this app uses the .local domain for viewing shared content on your iPad. If you are interested in more advanced stuff then you will be amazed by the way this app connects using a DynDns hostname as well as SMB port number and pipelining.
With this app you will be able to open a variety of file types. You can also open music files and video files (only formats which are supported by the iPad of course). You can also play songs in the background and they can be shared via AirPlay. The only problem is that when you play songs the app goes into a full-screen mode preventing you from creating a queue or browsing.
FileBrowser will also allow you to open images and PDF files. You can also save each item as a bookmark which will give you quick access the next time you need it. There are several settings which you can change. Some of them include options to purge the cache, changing remote permissions for creation or deletion of files, enabling admin shares etc.
By tweaking FileBrowser on your iPad you can easily develop it into a very powerful tool. You will easily be able to connect to your computer and network computers. The interface may not be the best but functionality gets top marks. Plus, this software is being developed further by the developers which will result in a good support for the app through updates.
Overall, FileBrowser for your iPad is pretty good. Also, for $3.99 this app is not very expensive (for an app of this genre).
If you happen to be living the ‘Apple Dream’ i.e. own an iPad as well as an iPhone then you may just be interested in a similar app for the iPhone known as NetPortal (developed by the developers of FileBrowser).| 100% of voters think this story ROCKS! |
