iPad accessory reviews: Alupen vs. oStylus

To start off, we have the Alupen priced at $24.95. It is basically a chunky, over-sized stubby pencil looking stylus which is around the same size as your highlighter pen. The writing tip of the Alupen is a black rubberized nub. Using the Alupen feels similar to holding a charcoal stick or like an oil pastel crayon, though heavier due to the solid aluminum body.

The second stylus is the oStylus priced higher at $37.50 which actually looks like it came out from a dentist’s clinic. It is a precision instrument with a washer like attachment at the tip. This was designed by a jeweler and the tip has a flattened ‘O’ shape with two contact points on it which allows it to glide over the iPad’s screen easily regardless of the angle who hold it at. On the backside of the ‘O’ is a sticky removable/replaceable washer which prevents any scratches on the iPad’s screen. One of the main problems with using a stylus for drawing/painting is that you cannot see where exactly your point of contact is since the finger or the stylus itself blocks your view. This problem is addressed in the oStylus since the space within the ‘O’ allows you to judge the center of where the contact is being made. There is however a short delay before which a mark is made on the screen using the oStylus.

The Alupen feels more natural when even though you cannot make out exactly where you are drawing/writing/painting. This problem though is common even while using pastels or charcoal on paper. The solid structure and weight feels excellent even though you have to get used it at first. To summarize, which stylus is more suitable for what? Alupen is more useful to substitute a crayon or a charcoal. Because the tip is thick it may seem that you are better off using your own fingers on the iPad. But if you have ever tried it you will realize that doing that is really difficult without any accuracy. The Alupen is extremely useful for painting and drawing and the weight/size is not an issue once you get used to it. oStylus is more for someone who needs a really precise stylus. It is excellent for more detailed work on the iPad and is very similar to a paintbrush. In all, both stylus are extremely well made and built for their prices. It actually depends on what you want to use the stylus for on your iPad. One piece of advice iPad.net can give you is that it is best to use the iPad in a case while using the stylus since the iPad will be raised giving you space to keep your wrist on the side comfortably. If you have always wanted to use a stylus on your iPad, you should definitely try either of the two.
