iPad News: Verizon Debuts Macho New Xoom Ad

Forget those namby-pamby iPad ads with their music, recipes and cute kids—here’s a tablet computer for real men! At least that seems to be what the ad agency that dreamed up this silly commercial wants you to think. This new ad from Verizon Wireless touting the Motorola Xoom is aimed at boys who like their toys. The spot, entitled “Vendetta,” features a handsome, hunky superhero type fighting against some sort of scary sci-fi monster with only his trusty Xoom. Kinda like that fantasy the kid in “Christmas Story” had about his Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle, only with a more expensive toy. The spot highlights the high tech features of the Xoom, like the 3D graphics engine, gyroscope and blazing speed. While all this hype might convince 10-year-old boys to beg mom and dad for a Xoom so they can develop their skills at Angry Birds, it’s not going to send anyone old enough to have a real job and a credit card down to the local Verizon store to plunk down $800 for a Xoom. Especially the potential tablet buyers who are planning to purchase one for business use. Maybe it would be nice if the next commercial for the Xoom showed us some of the nifty things you might actually want to do with it, like stream videos, play games, shop for cool apps—scratch that last one, since you really need an iPad for that.

And by next week, you’ll probably be seeing the first in a series of ads for the iPad 2, which should be announced on March 2. Unlike this ad from Verizon, Apple’s will almost certainly focus on the functionality of the iPad and how it appeals to the general public—not just little boys who never grew up.
