iPad News: Motorola Xoom Selling for $1200 at Best Buy?

We’ve been hearing reports that the highly touted Motorola Xoom tablet would be selling for around $800, which many criticized as being too high, even given the features of the tablet. But if this listing on Best Buy’s website is correct, buyers will have to dig even deeper if they plan to bring one home when it goes on sale later this month. The retail chain will begin taking preorders on February 17, and a listing on their website Sunday showed the Xoom priced at a whopping $1,199.99. You also have to activate data service from Verizon just to enable the Wi-Fi. While the listing was removed later on Sunday night, this does not bode well for what we can expect as a retail price for the Xoom. It’s not really fair to compare the price of the Xoom to that of the current iPad, since the Xoom has many new features missing from the first edition of Apple’s tablet. But it’s not the “old” iPad the Xoom will be competing with—it’s the iPad 2, which could be unveiled by Apple before the end of February—just as the Xoom goes on sale.

If the tried-and-true iPad comes out with a newer, faster model incorporating the same general specs as the Xoom, which is the average buyer more likely to choose? Especially when you count in the iPad’s huge selection of available apps. Maybe this $1,199.99 figure is a mistake, but even at $800, the Xoom may not be that much of a bargain if the iPad 2 turns out to be everything we’ve come to expect.
