iPad News: Apple Slashes Prices on Original iPad

Now aren’t you glad you didn’t pay full price for an iPad as a Valentine’s present last month? With today’s official debut of the iPad 2, the first version just became last year’s model. The Apple online store was down for a few hours this morning as they made adjustments to accommodate the new model. Now the remaining stock of the 2010 model iPad is marked down by about $100, so you can get a 16GB Wi-Fi model for just $399. The most expensive 64GB 3G iPad is going for $729. For real bargain hunters, the refurbished iPads are starting at $349, and Apple does a bang-up job of refurbishing their products. These prices are currently good only at the Apple online store, but I won’t be surprised if the same prices apply to what’s left in stock at the Apple retail stores. So far, I haven’t found any markdowns at Best Buy or other authorized Apple resellers, but since the new iPad 2 was just introduced a couple of hours ago, more price drops could happen over the next few days. These are good deals, if you don’t mind that the “old” iPad lacks some of the features of the new one, like front and rear-facing cameras, plus it’s thicker, heavier and slower. But if the kids have been bugging you to buy them an iPad, these prices look pretty good.

If you’re eagerly awaiting the new iPad 2, you’ll have to wait a little longer. It goes on sale March 11, and the Apple store isn’t taking pre-orders yet.
