While most Apple fans were very happy about yesterday’s news about the iPad 2, there were a few feeling definitely disgruntled—those who bought last year’s iPad just ahead of the big announcement. Not only did they pay full price for the “old” model, they could have paid a lot less for it if they had waited awhile, because Apple dropped the price on original iPads by $100 yesterday. But since they don’t really like hoards of angry customers cluttering up their stores, Apple is offering a $100 refund to customers who recently purchased an iPad at the full price. The catch is that you have to file within Apple’s 14-day return window. You also need to produce your receipt. This isn’t really anything new for Apple, as they outline in their sales policy: “Should Apple reduce its price on any shipped product within 14 calendar days of shipment, you may contact Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 to request a refund or credit of the difference between the price you were charged and the current selling price. To receive the refund or credit you must contact Apple within 14 calendar days of the price change.” This is fine for those who bought an iPad in the last few days, not so good if you bought one as a Christmas or Valentine’s gift. But you have to wonder how many people were clueless enough to buy a new iPad for $499+ when everyone knew full well that a new model was right around the corner?

Considering that “old” iPads are likely to be going for considerably less than $399 in the near future, it might make more sense to just return the first iPad and use the credit toward buying an iPad 2 for $499 when they start shipping March 11.
