iPad 2 News: Why You Can't Buy an iPad 2

Have you gotten up early to get in line at the local Apple Store multiple times and always walked away empty-handed? You’re not alone, and if you’re angry, we don’t blame you. There are several reasons why the experience is so frustrating, and some of them are due to Apple’s own policies. Many potential iPad 2 buyers have reported being very close to the front of the line, but being cut off because customers in front of them bought more than one device. According to the New York Post, a “cutthroat Asian group” has hired scammers to scoop up as many iPad 2s as possible from Apple’s flagship store on Fifth Ave. in New York City. One scammer gloated, “We buy from here, then sell.” Predictably, honest would-be customers are angry, and fights have broken out at the NYC store. One Apple employee told the Post: “Listen, we all know what’s going on here. I find it sad and disgusting. These people are preventing ordinary folks from getting their hands on an iPad.” So why hasn’t Apple done anything about these gray-market operators?

Last year, when the original iPad came out, Apple had a policy of credit card purchases only and one iPad per customer. At least this could prevent one buyer at the front of the line with a bag full of cash from emptying a store of its entire stock of iPad 2s. It’s time for Apple to admit that they botched this launch badly and make some changes ASAP—hopefully before a customer actually gets hurt.
