iPad 2 News: Wait Time for Apple Online Orders Stretches to 4-5 Weeks

It was just last week when we were sure that Apple was totally ready for this year’s launch of the iPad 2, and none of the snafus that plagued the debut of the original were going to happen again. No stores running out in a few minutes, no weeks-long waits for delivery—Apple was going to do it right this time. Well, four days after the iPad 2 went on sale, the chaos just seems to get worse. The delivery time for orders from the Apple online store have been steadily increasing, going from a few days Friday morning to 2-3 weeks Friday afternoon to 4-5 weeks late Monday. Last year, it took four months for Apple to catch up—can they beat that this year? A big part of the problem is the higher sales volume for the iPad 2. In 2010, Apple sold 300,000 iPads on day one and 1,000,000 in the first 28 days. While Apple has not yet released figures for the iPad 2, estimates range from 500,000 to 1,000,000, most of them sold just Friday night. If buyers really did purchase a million iPad 2s, that helps to explain the backlog.

But there are happy Apple fans out there, including the ones who ordered online Friday and are now getting their iPad 2s. MacRumors has reported that one buyer who ordered from AT&T received his iPad 2 on Monday. It will be interesting to see how long it takes for the earliest orders to arrive this week. Are AT&T customers getting their packages faster than those who order from AT&T? For those who don’t feel like waiting a week, or five, more stock is expected to hit the Apple Stores on Tuesday, but be prepared to get in line again.
