iPad 2 News: The iPad 2 is a Bonanza for eBay Sellers

If you want an iPad 2 ASAP, good luck. You can order online from Apple and wait a month, or line up at 4 a.m. in front of your Apple retail store and take your chances. Or if money is no object, you can buy an iPad 2 off eBay right now and pay several hundred dollars over list price. If you do, you’ll be in good company, since 12,000 buyers have already turned to eBay to get their iPad 2s. On Thursday, the online reseller revealed the details of the first two weeks of iPad 2 sales. No doubt because of the continued difficulty of getting an iPad 2 in the U.S., 65% of eBay’s sales come from within the country, compared to the 35% bought within the U.S last year. The most-purchased iPad 2s come from varying ends of the scale, with the lowest priced 16 GB Wi-Fi only model representing 30% of total sales, followed by the pricier 64GB 3G model accounting for 23%. The 16GB Wi-Fi iPad that sells at authorized Apple sellers for $499 is going for an average selling price of $697, a 40% profit for the person selling it. The higher-priced iPad 2 models offer an even higher profit margin, with the 64GB Wi-Fi/3G iPad 2 that sells for $829 at Apple going for an average of $1,235, a 49% hike. Even more profitable is the 64GB Wi-Fi iPad 2, which sells on eBay for an average of $963, 53% above the list price of $699.

Is this making you want to punch a scalper in the nose? Preferably the one who was in front of you in line at the Apple store and snapped up the last two iPad 2s after you stood in line for hours? I don’t blame you. Let’s hope Apple ramps up production on the iPad 2 so that everyone who wants one can buy it for a reasonable price instead of having to get it on eBay.
