iPad 2 News: Steve Jobs Underestimated the iPad App Advantage

One of the biggest advantages Apple has over its rivals is the apps. The iTunes store has an app for everything—and if it doesn’t now, it will by next week. Ever since the iPad 1 launched nearly a year ago, developers have been adding apps especially for the iPad, with more coming every day. The makers of this year’s crop of iPad wannabes are frantically trying to play catch-up, not just with the tablets but with the apps they run. Apple CEO Steve Jobs played on this advantage while introducing the iPad 2 earlier this month. Jobs noted that the iTunes iOS App Store has a whopping 350,000 apps, and 65,000 of them can be used on the iPad. Jobs pointed out the “consumption apps, creation apps and fantastic games, and a lot of apps for business and vertical markets apps like medical. The things people are doing here are amazing.” The Apple chief got a laugh out of the audience by pointing to a graphic of the Android honeybee with a sign saying 100, and saying: “That compares to our competitors, who are trying to launch these days with at most 100 apps. And I think we’re being a little generous here. This is a huge advantage we have.” A little generous? How about a lot generous? A look at Google’s Android Marketplace will find a mere 50 apps listed as “featured for tablets.” Most of them were designed for Android smartphone and merely upsized for the larger tablet computer screen. So how many apps are identified as being “specifically designed for a tablet experience?” 17.

Maybe by the time those Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablets launching soon hit the market, there will be two-dozen to choose from. Of course, by then the iPad could have 100,000 just for the iPad. When will Google catch up to Apple in the apps department? How about never?
