iPad 2 News: Online Sales for iPad 2 Begin at 4 a.m. EST

The big day is almost here! The iPad 2 will officially go on sale at 5 p.m. Friday afternoon, but if you don’t feel like joining in the crowds at the mall, Apple will start taking orders for the iPad at its online store starting at 4 a.m. EST tomorrow morning. Of course, you’ll have to wait for it to be delivered, but Apple’s shipping is free and generally fast, and they’ll even throw in free engraving. This does raise the question of availability—will there be delays in processing orders this year due to heavy demand? Apple was caught by surprise last year, when orders for the original iPad outnumbered the stock on hand. The company isn’t likely to get caught short again, now that a year and millions of sales later, they know just how popular the iPad has turned out to be. There are some advantages to actually going out to a store to pick up your iPad 2, like being able to bring it home immediately. The Apple Stores are offering free Personal Setup service with purchase of an iPad 2, which could be very helpful for new customers who didn’t buy the first iPad. Other chains on board for launch day are Best Buy, Target, Walmart, AT&T and Verizon.

There are more models to choose from this time around, since both Wi-Fi only and 3G models will be available from day one, and buyers have a choice of white or black. At the media event where the iPad 2 was unveiled, Steve Jobs called 2011 “the year of the iPad 2.” That year officially begins tomorrow, and this is the weekend of the iPad 2!
