iPad 2 News: No iPad 3 This Year?

There’s been talk that we might be getting an even newer version of the iPad by the end of this year, but a report from DigiTimes say the next generation tablet won’t be making its debut until 2012. The Taiwan-based paper cites sources with component partners who claim that Apple has not yet given them any information about the iPad 3. If upstream component makers haven’t gotten any orders from Apple so far, there isn’t likely to be a newer version of the iPad in 2011. But does Apple really need one? The iPad 2 came just a month ago, and Apple is still trying to keep up with the demand for the second gen tablet. A new report from Gartner analysts has predicted that Apple can sell 48 million iPads in 2011, and the company will be hard pressed to produce that many units over the next eight months. After the early adaptors all get their iPad 2s, Apple will amp up the advertising to convince more potential buyers that they really need to try the popular tab. Talk that the iPad 2 could be made obsolete by a newer model within a few months could definitely dampen their enthusiasm.

While a brand new iPad would attract legions of Christmas shoppers, the fact that the iPad 1 was more than six months old last year at holiday time didn’t deter millions of buyers from picking them ups as presents. By then, there should be at least a few more reasons to buy an iPad 2, like more apps, upgraded software with more features and more options for entertainment as satellite and cable providers add more offerings to their streaming video choices.
