iPad 2 News: iPad 2 Screen Thinner, More Flexible

Just about everything about the iPad 2 is slimmer and lighter than its predecessor, including the glass screen. The iPad 2’s screen, including the LCD, is 27% thinner than that of the iPad 1. It would be easy to assume that the skinnier glass would be less durable, more fragile and less flexible, but these tests prove otherwise. The iPhone repair gurus at iFixyouri tested the glass from both versions of the iPad and recorded the results. Both were subjected to a series of grueling stress tests to see at what point each glass would bend and eventually break. The outcome showed that the thinner iPad 2 glass was just as strong but much more bendable, “because it is a bit more flexible has more bending tolerances.” This is very good news for those who’ve just purchased an iPad 2 and may be wondering if it’s more prone to breakage than the original—it isn’t. This does not mean you should toss it around or drop it on cement, but it does bode well for the future durability of the iPad 2.

These tests also suggest that we could be seeing even stronger, more flexible and lighter screens on the next generations of Apple mobile devices, like the iPhone 5 and upcoming versions of the iPod Touch. We’ve already heard rumors that the iPhone 5 will be the thinnest smartphone ever, and if it sports a screen 27% thinner than that of the iPhone 4, it could definitely happen. If you want to watch the guys from iFixyouri torture a couple of glass screens with objects of destruction, check out the YouTube video here. Just don’t try this at home!
