iPad 2 News: How to Get the Most for Your Old iPad

I just sneaked a peek over at eBay to see what owners of first generation iPads were trying to get for their now-outdated devices. Reality obviously hasn’t set in for these dreamers, because some are trying to get $500 for an iPad that could be bought new with a warranty for $349-399 at Apple’s online store. I suspect many of them placed their ads before Wednesday’s game-changing announcement of the iPad 2. Your once-coveted 2010 iPad just became the rusted-out Yugo parked in the back of the used car lot. Yeah, you could have gotten more money our of it of you had moved it a month ago, back when the public still believed the iPad 2 wouldn’t be coming until April, if then. But that’s water under the bridge, and you need to scratch up the cash for a brand new iPad 2 at $499+. Where to go? There’s always the old reliables, eBay and Craigslist. Just be realistic and price your old iPad for less than new models are now selling for. In the case of Craigslist, read the competing ads and try to make your iPad sound better than the competition. Do consider a couple of less-known sites that could get you more cash for your trade-in. NextWorth is offering a trade-in option with retail chain Target with credit towards a purchase or a gift card, plus free, insured UPS shipping. As of last week, NextWorth was listing prices of $255-390 for iPads with “light wear.”

Another possibility is re-commerce site Gazellle, which has seen a spike in owners wanting to sell first-gen iPads. But you should probably act fast, since some tech bloggers are predicting that last year’s iPads could go soon for as little as $199 on sites like Amazon and Best Buy.
