iPad 2 News: Apple Orders Trickling In, Inventory Policies Changing

Ó

Were you one of the resourceful ones who crawled out of bed in the middle of the night to get your order in for the iPad 2 when it went on sale Friday? Are you still waiting for it five days later? This is getting to be a pretty common complaint, as iPad 2s ordered from AT&T began arriving on Monday, while many Apple customers are still looking for theirs. The first trickle of Apple orders has begun, but the process seems to be moving very slowly. Moving even more slowly is the delivery of new stock to Apple retail locations, which is why the company has adjusted its inventory practices in the wake of the demand for the iPad 2. Rather than just rushing newly-arrived inventory onto the sales floor, fresh shipments of iPad 2s that arrive during business hours are held until the following morning. Supposedly, this makes for less stress and confusion on the part of Apple employees. It also allows them to open the store early and sell off the current batch of iPad 2s before moving on to business as usual. So if you drop by your local Apple Store for the umpteenth time and the clerk tells you to come back in the morning, they do know something you don’t and you should plan to return really early the next a.m.

Apple has made another sneaky little change, likely to prevent us from guessing how many iPad 2 units have been sold before they make an official announcement. Last year, Apple online orders were numbered sequentially, while this year they’re numbered randomly. So why is Apple taking so long to make that announcement? I’m betting they’re holding off until the number officially hits a million. Last year, it took 28 days—this year it could happen in less than a week.
