iPad 2 News: 500,000 Sold in Opening Weekend?

It’s pretty obvious that Apple sold a heckuva lot of iPad 2s over the weekend, since practically every store that carried them is sold out. Veteran Apple analyst Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray had his team survey retailers to put together his estimate of the initial iPad 2 sales. All of the Apple, Target and Best Buy stores contacted were totally out of the iPad 2 and had no idea when more stock would come in. In a research note, Munster stated. “iPads are sold out across virtually all channels. We were unable to find any availability.” Munster had earlier predicted that Apple would sell 5.5 million iPads this quarter, but now he expects that number to be surpassed, noting that 70% of the customers interviewed were first-time buyers. Trip Chowdhry of Global Equities Research has an even more ambitious estimate—three times as many iPad 2s sold as the original during its debut. Since last year’s figure was 300,000 the first day, that would be 900,000 units of the iPad 2. Is this realistic? Given that the iPad 2 was sold in 10,000 retail locations and most of them sold out quickly, it probably is. Whether because Apple actually underestimated the demand for the iPad 2, or deliberately shipped far less than they could sell to ignite a media storm, the result is that the same thing is happening this year as last—customers who want an iPad 2 will have to wait, maybe as long as four weeks.

Apple spokeswoman Trudy Miller stated, “Demand for the next-generation iPad has been amazing and we are working hard to get iPad 2 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible.” So far, they’re not saying how soon that will be, but an official figure on the weekend’s iPad 2 sales could come as early as Monday.
