Far Cry

IGN has posted a new interview with game designer Fabrice Curry about the upcoming Wii version of Far Cry and while it reiterates some points covered in an older preview, there's also some new stuff you can look forward to as well as four new screenshots. Key points of the interview include:
  • Vengeance builds on Far Cry Instincts Evolution while adding Wii-specific content and gameplay mechanics
  • At least three new maps: Tourist Resort, an abandoned World War II base and a petrol refinery, each environment with its own identity
  • New characters and weapons
  • Work on Far Cry Vengeance started at the same time as Far Cry Instincts Predator; more than 60 people on the dev team
  • Xbox version will still retain the visual edge with some details, even while the Wii is more powerful overall - still, we can "expect a game as beautiful as what we used to see on Xbox."
  • No map editor as in the previous games
  • Splitscreen multiplayer mode, possibly online features as well

More screens of Rockman Rebirth have surfaced, giving a more in-depth look to the battle system that has been given a complete makeover since the prequel Rockman EXE - known to the US and Europe as Megaman Battle Network. With the game's release, Capcom commemorates the 20th anniversary of our little blue robot friend. Capcom experienced a lot of success with the Megaman games on the GBA, so Rebirth should only be the start of a whole lot of new titles in the franchise.

Developed by the team responsible for Battle Network, Rebirth is a "Data Action RPG" and lets players battle against viruses and other malicious computer software with a variety of technical skills. A WiFi mode will also be included to allow players to fight against each other and trade items. A US release hasn't been confirmed yet, but looking at the past Megaman releases we're sure Rebirth will hit North American shelves at some point.

Of course, we'll update you on Rockman Rebirth again once Capcom reveals new information.

Guitar HeroIn his keynote speech at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia XV Conference, CEO and chairman of Activision, Robert Kotick, confirmed suspicions of popular PS2 rhythm game Guitar Hero coming to other consoles as well. According to Kotick, Activision plans to publish a version of the title on "every significant new format" eventually.
Apparently, employees of retail chain GameStation had been informed about a Guitar Hero release on the Xbox 360 earlier this week, so this news was already more or less expected.

Developed by Red Octane, Guitar Hero was released last year for the Playstation 2 and garnered critical acclaim everywhere for it's clever re-invention of the rhythm game genre, letting players feel like true rock-stars with the guitar-shaped controller. A huge fanbase has already developed around the franchise, and Guitar Hero II will hit PS2's in November. Hopefully it won't be long then until we're indeed rocking out on our Xbox 360s, Wiis and PS3s.

TreasurePerhaps a few of our readers are aware of the Japanese developer Treasure, a company formed in 1992 by ex-Konami employees. Since then, it has risen to fame not only in it's home country, but has also developed a cult following among hardcore gamers in the West. It was this studio that created the timeless Gunstar Heroes on the Genesis (and it's GBA follow-up).

More recently, however, the developer has been critically lauded for their series of shoot 'em ups, starting with Radiant Silvergun on the Sega Saturn, and continued with the indirect sequel Ikaruga for the Dreamcast and GameCube. Not surprisingly, many fans are awaiting a third game that will masterfully bring the trilogy to a close. If Play Magazine is to be believed, they may get their wish fulfilled soon - the most recent issue states:

"Treasure Shooter"

The best for last? Perhaps, friends, perhaps. Right before press time, Treasure dropped a bomb in the form of an "original shooting game" announcement...and that can mean only one thing: RS3. Always planned as a trilogy, the Radiant Silvergun/Ikaruga (known in preproduction as "RS2") series will receive it's final installment on Xbox 360. Watch this space for more information.

Developer: Treasure
Publisher: Undetermined
Release date: Unknown

Treasure's decision to develop for the Xbox 360 is quite puzzling - we all know the console is being virtually ignored in Japan. Nonetheless, as games like Geometry Wars are more than successful, Microsoft easily proved that the Xbox 360 is suitable for arcade 2D shooting action as much as for next-gen 3D marvels. So while it's not even safe to say the game in development is indeed Radiant Silvergun 3, let's keep our fingers crossed - because almost everything Treasure touches turns out to be one fantastic work.

BiowareWe've had speculations abound a while ago when BioWare published a poll asking gamers about their reaction to a possible handheld game by the legendary PC/Xbox developer - responsible for classics such as Baldurs Gate 1 & 2, Knights of the Old Republic as well as the upcoming Mass Effect. Looks like their plans have fully come to fruition now as BioWare today announced the forming of a new development division focusing on handheld games.

Games industry veteran Dan Tudge will be leading the group as a project director. His past work includes the overseeing of development of AAA Microsoft, Nintendo, THQ and Sega titles.

Nintendo fans will be excited to hear that the first game by the new team will be released for the DS. "As always, we are committed to creating the best story-driven games in the world, and the Nintendo DS offers us an exciting new platform to engage," commented Greg Zeschuk, president of BioWare. "The new project offers tremendous opportunities, and we're looking for talented and passionate developers to become part of that."

The Canadian development studio has also announced open employment positions on the new handheld team - you can check out the details on their website. Nothing specific is known about the upcoming game yet, but we'll make sure you'll get to read about new details as soon as they become available.

Bullet Witch

Bullet Witch is one of Microsoft's hopes to get their Xbox 360 sales in Japan on a more healthy level, and considering the coverage on this game, if they don't succeed with Bullet Witch, there must be something seriously wrong with Japanese gamers. Who doesn't want to play a game with a bullet-spewing, bad-ass female protagonist?

Publisher Atari recently picked up this title for a release in the US and Europe, so if all goes well, you'll get to fight against demons and save the world at the beginning of 2007.

Aquaman

Aquaman is just one of many unlockable characters in Justice League Heroes, the action adventure that will hit current-gen consoles as well as PSP and DS this Fall. The game is voiced by an impressive cast, including Ron Perlman (Hellboy, Blade II, Justice League TV series) as Batman, Michael Jai White (Spawn, Spawn: The Animation) as Green Lantern; Crispin Freeman (Viewtiful Joe, Kingdom Hearts II) as Superman, and many more recognizable names.

In Justice League Heroes, players will be able to customize and master the super powers of many popular comic book heroes in a RPG-style fashion as they fight in destructible environments spanning many locations of the universe. The game will include cooperative modes, countless numbers of enemies and a compelling story. Looking at these screens, Justice League Heroes seems to be shaping up as another great comic book adaption.

Perhaps in an attempt to catch up on Auto Assault's success, Nice Tech Ltd. has just announced the development of Carnage for the Xbox 360 and PC. Touted as a "an adrenaline fuelled driving and combat frenzy", the game will deliver MMO-scope vehicular combat via Xbox Live and regular servers. The developer has so far only revealed a few key features of Carnage, so here they are... Carnage for the 360

  • Hugely multiplayer vehicle combat
  • Large interactive game arenas
  • Real-time dynamics and collision systems
  • "Deathmatch"-oriented gameplay
  • Individual or cooperative game modes
  • Managed tournament system
  • Customisable vehicles, armour, components & weapons
  • Persistent player statistics & global ranking reward system
  • Support for hundreds of thousands of players
  • Simple, addictive "dip-in-dip-out" gameplay for all levels

Carnage will be powered by AliceServer technology, enabling a great number of players to be supported on standard server hardware. Additionally, the game client will allow for highly scalable visuals, making it possible to unleash the carnage even on computers with on-board graphics hardware.

What Nice Tech plans to offer with Carnage sounds rather promising, and of course we'll give you an update once more information and the first screenshots find their way onto the internet.
