SOEThe Xbox 360 began online service for gamers through Xbox Live back in 2002. Admittedly, Microsoft has enjoyed a comfortable and an unprecedented advantage since then. But things might not stay the same for long as Sony just made a new friend. And its name is Xfire.

The freeware instant messaging service targeted toward gamers is currently being planned to be incorporated to the PlayStation Network Platform (PNP). It can be recalled that Ken Kutaragi, Sony's Computer Entertainment Chief, expressed that the PlayStation 3's online service would likely be free. The company recognizes that such basic function and service is normally free to a PC.

If you dig a bit deeper, the idea could very well be set already in motion as Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom appears in the supported software list on the PC Xfire client's .ini file. The said title is a PS3 exclusive launch. Although the two companies didn't give any more information about the partnership, both didn't deny it as well.

XfireFurther details as to how Xfire will work on PS3 are still bleak as of the moment. However, it is rather logical to believe that the basic PC functions, some of which Xbox Live also offers, will be put to use:

Friend Tracker: allows users to manage their Friend's lists and track friends
One-Click Join: allows users to click on their name and join the game if it's available
Server Browser: see the variety of servers available for different games
Xfire In-Game: instant messaging while you play with voice chat
File & Patch Downloads: automatically detects updates when the game is booted up or provide a gateway for some sort of Marketplace
Profiles with Automatic Stats: exports an .xml feed of your stats

Lastly and more excitingly, Microsoft's idea of Live Anywhere (combining PC and X360 players) can easily be replicated with Xfire. With all these in mind, one can't help but wonder in the end: If PS3 and X360 players can both play with PC gamers, why can't they with each other?

ROFL, was THIS sony's online plan the entire time?

And did you guys honestly just compare Xfire to Xbox live? Maybe some features are very similar, yes, but xfire is not competition to 360 by a long shot, please don't mislead people :p.

» um maybe you didn't you notice

but xfire is only part of sony's online plan. It said the i.m. software (xfire) would be built into ps3's interface even if you didn't go online.

the rest of it will be built up among sony's online network. allowing you to do a myspace community, share points and buy things, and ect.

w00ty. and it's all free. way to go, sony. you restored faith in the online plans.

» I Say Let It Happen

I hope Sony and Xfire come up with a good plan, and hopefully it will allow gamers of PC and Xbox play one another. That would be pretty cool. Only if Sony or Microsoft stops with the "who's better" attitude and commit to making it happen. Another thing is that it should not take too much for them to make it happen since most of the backbone of the idea is already in place. Also the companies that make the games should be involved knowing that they supply the software and the interfacing could be somewhat universal for their titles. All of this can increase people using online features and increase the fun.

 » Big news !!!

M$ and the HD-dvd family have found a way to put 45GB in one DISC ! Using triple layer.

WOW they really don't like the diss Sony give them with Resistance.

Anyway that changer nothing because the xbox360 don't use it for games.

YOU SEE M$ NO THEY ARE BEHIND! i hate xbox360!

 » Hhaha

It does not matter if an HD-DVD can hold 45GB or whatever, MS cannot/will not use the discs for games anyway.

This is merely an IM intergration into their online plan. They're not simply whipping up X-fire and saying "Here is PS3 ONLINE!!!!"

I personally think it's great! X-fire is great and users of the service already can just jump on over to the PS3's version without problem.

» Xfire... has a catchy name

And the editor is right: If the PS3 and XBOX360 can interact with a PC in multiplayer, why not eachother?

To have PC, PS3, and 360 gamers all on a virtual battlefield... That would be gaming Nirvana.

Oh, wait... Final Fantasy XI already does that. (not sarcasm, it just occured to me)

Still, let's hope neither side are pigheaded enough to refuse such a service to gamers.

omg, i've used xfire and it is just a memory hog and a cpu hog! It might be because i use a slightly older system than most others (athlon 340, 768 mb ram, geforce 4400), but still, why use this instead of something else?

anyways, they are both the same, xfire and live only allow one simultaneous dl compared to my 3 dl on pc. Live is probably more efficient, especially as its had mroe time to mature as a program (patched up, etc.)

 » Why even bother

Feature: Instead of one core CPU the PS3 has Cell with its multicore system.
Whine: It is too complex, so it is useless

F: PS3 has either a 20GB or 60GB hard-drive
W: 60GB is too big. Who needs more than 20GB anyway. I want to choose if I want a hard-drive in my PS3

F:PS3 has Blu-ray capability.
W:DVD is good enough for me. I dont need HD movies. I dont have a HD-TV. Who needs discs with 50GB or more?

F: PS3 has online network system with chat, video and other features. It also uses Xfire for some of its functions.
W:"omg, i've used xfire and it is just a memory hog and a cpu hog! It might be because i use a slightly older system than most others (athlon 340, 768 mb ram, geforce 4400), but still, why use this instead of something else?

#15 you got a point. sony can say the ps3 will come with a built-in hd projecter, and 5$ all for 200$. and somebody will say something is wrong with it. sony cant win. but Im still behind them all the way. Xbot need to stop talking trash and buy the 360. its not selling so well, so they need to stop talking trash and go support thier system. wait let me rephrase myself before some xbot come on here to bass me. the 360 isnt doing as good as they thought. anyway it is sad.

let's put it this way... lets say about 80% of all software and games are running under what OS? that's right! M$OS... most of you who are here, posting blogs, talking trash about M$ are supporting M$ in one way or the other whether you like it or not... 360 is running on a CE version of the M$ OS, that is why it is a bit hard to crack it, but guess what the PS3 is running on? LInux shell... the PS3 will be like the PSP, as soon as it comes out it will be cracked!

M$ is not dumb they thought about the future too... why do you think all their accessories are not integrated like the PS3? so it will be upgradable... i.e. bigger HDD, faster wireless adapter (11N), HD-DVD and basically anything you can attach to a USB... but sony on the other hand decided to integrate everything, no need for upgrades they said, machine of the future!... technology is climbing fast and saying the PS3 will last 10 years, i don't think so... if anyone here is a techi, how many times do you upgrade your machine or add something to your PC in a year? for me, i will call the PS3, machine of the future when i can run homebrew on it...

don't get me wrong... i have a ps1, 2 ps2's and a PSP... i love sony's products but sony's plan to go head to head with 360 OS and Online features. sony already LOST!!!

just my 2 cents!

Have you been living under a rock? Or have you head what you stated for the 360 upgrades, warped them, and ignored all the news that the PS3 is upgradable in the same exact way you just said for the 360.

Usually I don't like to get on that lower level of calling people names, but you sir, are an idiiiooott.

 » Sony, Gamespy and Xfire

Sony announced long aho they teamed up with gamespy for the PS3s online system. Now they are teaming up with Xfire for messaging and otherf eatures Xfire provides.

What does this mean? You get more features then Xbox Live will ever have and for what cost to players? ZERO

gamespy has always been free through advtertisements. For a simple 30 second advertisement every time you load up the PS3, you get unlimited gaming. Is that worth 60 bucks a year?

Gamespy and Xfire are very popular programs. Gamespy was the first company to offer game tracking (you know, the feature that lets you know what game ur friend is playing) and Microsoft stole the idea from them.

Gamespy is what Xbox Live wants to be. Xbox Live is a not so close copy of gamespy. gamespy offers premium services that are way beyond the lifespan of Xbox live and gamespy will continue to set the standard for the online gaming networks.

Xbox Live is crap. The only thing it does is limit. And soon enough developers will like the idea open development for their online system, and the PS3 online network will just be what connects everything together.
