Wii Menu update v3.3 blocks Twilight Hack - Image 1

Wii Menu Update v3.3 has been released, and though it adds welcome features for the Mii Channel, it has also reportedly addressed the problem of "unauthorized modifications" to the Nintendo Wii. And the problem they're resolving with this software upgrade is Team Twiizer's Twilight Hack, which you may note from the update's notice statement:

Because unauthorized modifications to save files may impair game play or the Wii Console, updating to Wii Menu version 3.3 will also check for and automatically remove such save files.

Wii Menu Update v3.3 adds more functionality to Mii manipulation in the Mii Channel, which allows users to immediately swap Miis from the Mii Plaza to the Mii Parade. The software allows this through the addition of an icon which Miis can be dragged into for the transfer to initiate.

The Twilight Hack has been the beginning of endless possibilities for the Nintendo console, which include many things from converting the machine into a low-power Web server to being an able organizer of Wii-compatible software.

But Nintendo thinks enough is enough, and it's probably because of concerns of piracy over Virtual Console and WiiWare software. We await official word from WiiBrew and Nintendo regarding this development. Stay tuned.

*UPDATE*: Word from developers at WiiBrew, the home of Nintendo Wii homebrew, is that while the Wii Menu update does successfully remove the altered The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess game save from the Wii's primary NAND Flash storage, it has not affected Team Twiizer's Homebrew Channel in any way.

In fact, we hear from several sources that all homebrew applications are apparently left untouched. Even some applications that write to the SD cards are not affected by the Wii Menu's new security procedures.

The update is true enough, however: several users have noted that the Wii Menu does delete the Twilight Hack save game, and even prevents the duplication of altered game saves of Twilight Princess to the Wii's storage.

As far as the homebrew developers are concerned, the Wii Menu update is not critical to the homebrew community's efforts. It is for the most part circumvented by the existence of the Homebrew Channel on your Wii, which is capable of launching homebrew software on its own without the help of the Twilight Hack.

We intend to update you as soon as we get more word on the issue.

Thanks to QJ.NET reader digicron for the heads up!

 » wtf?

I assume this has no effect on the homebrew channel? That's my only concern. I'm not updating until I know for sure.

Also, I was looking at wiibrew earlier today and checked how many times wiibrew pages had been accessed and the most viewed pages only come up around 500,000. There are very few twilight hackers out there, so wtf nintendo? I suppose I understand concerns about piracy, (But not even really, because most true twilight hackers are using homebrew software for the sake of homebrew software) but wtf nintendo? wtf?

well from wiibrew some people are reporting that homebrew channel still works after update.

straight from wiibrew:

" Q: It says the UPDATE removes any edited save files... can you just recopy the twilight princess hack again?
A: Nope, you can't, it won't let you copy any edited file.

Q:Will it delete Homebrew Channel?
A: No, it won't delete it.

Q: Is Homebrew Channel still working?
A: Some people say yes.

The update isn't critical at this time. "

 » new update

from Bushing from hackmii.com

http://hackmii.com/2008/06/june-16-wii-update/

Several pieces of Nintendo system software have been updated:

I’m currently disassembling these to see what has changed. Please do not pester me about this or ask what our response will be; this isn’t exactly easy or quick. Comments will be enabled once i’ve completed my analysis.

 » HBC, Apps

Homebrew channel works as usual, all homebrew apps work too loaded through HBC including USB mass storage apps.

Side note...
Anyone know why the CAPTCHA pic will not load on qj.net's forum registration or email or contact us pages? I'm trying to release my Wii Brew SD installer program and give qj.net the headsup but I cant get the damn pic to load up and give me a freakin code.

 » They've already got a fix

From bushing's blog:

"Congrats to tmbinc and tehpola for finding a combination of two bugs in the code that Nintendo added that — when combined — allow us to fool their check into ignoring the TP hack. More info will be forthcoming — I still wouldn’t rush to update my system, anyway."

 » Datel Freeloader

Does this work with the Wii Freeloader? I alerady have HBC installed, so Twilight Hack doesn't concern me that much, but I need the Wii Freeloader to play Japanese games on my American Wii.

 » Yes.

It'll FUBAR your Freeloader. If you need the Freeloader, don't update.

 » New WII owner

Question: I've read that you can use the Homebrew Channel and not need the Twilight Hack, yet it seems you have to have the Twilight hack to get the HBC installed. Is this correct? I'm a new Wii owner and can't find definitive info on how to rig the Wii for homebrew. I don't have the Zelda game. Anyone care to explain with great detail or point me to a place that does explain or video of the process? Thanks!!!

best bet is to check out wiibrew.org they have all the info's there. unless you have a modchip then im 99% sure the only way to install HBC is via twilight hack.

 » People say

Some people on forums are saying that it blocks the installation of new channels as well.

Can anyone confirm that?

 » ok...Trucha isnt dead...yet

Theres nothing to worry about. The update isnt as bad as it could have been.

Heres what the new update does and doesnt for anyone thats still confused.

*It doesnt effect the Homebrew channel nor any homebrew that you would run through it.
*If you have any pirated VC/Wiiware games these are not effected either and nor is the WADManager/Installer.(the update was made in march way before the VC piracy)

*It Blocks you from copying the TP hack to your Wii
*If you already have the save file that is modified and you update to it it will check if you have it and delete it.
Waninkokos save file installer isnt going to work as the Wii will just delete it again.

*It blocks the Trucha bug(there seems to be a way around it read below), this means if you have a freeloader and 3.3 its useless and discs that have been signed with trucha will not work like manhunt 2, GHIII custom songs, SSBB DVD5 version, PPF patches for modchip detection errors etc

/Gecko region free 1.5(homebrew app)seems to be able run Trucha signed discs this could be because it boots into another IOS.
