We'll miss you. It's times like these that make game bloggers and journalists like myself cry. Mostly, it's because magazines are the format that brought the love of gaming to the forefront of many gamers' hearts. That is why it saddens me to say that the US version of "Official PlayStation Magazine" will be printing its final issue in January 2007.

According to a statement by Ziff Davis, its American publisher, it seems the magazine doesn't fit the strategic vision of the company. Known by many readers to be the magazine that always has a demo disc of goodies inside, the PlayStation 3's online capabilities have apparently made the idea of demo discs obsolete.

Scott McCarthy, President of the Ziff Davis Game Group, explained the effect of the PS3's online capabilities on the market. "With this next generation of game consoles," he said, "the days of having to bundle a disc with a magazine to distribute games-related content are over. And the disc has clearly been a major driver for consumer interest in premium-priced, platform-specific magazines in the past, when the magazine disc was the only way gamers could get such content."

We're all going to miss the American "Official PlayStation Magazine". Hopefully, it's charm and words might still live on through the PS3, as the Ziff Davis Game Group is going to work with Sony to bring original content specifically for the PS3. Whether that means we'll see a PS3 version of the OPM remains to be seen, but it's a nice thought nevertheless.

This is great news. One less biased magizine out there. I've been accused of being a fanboy, but I know better to trust a magizine that's "official". They can't give balanced reviews, and they don't. OPM rated games by how much they thought they would sale. Just like when the "official" XBOx magizine said there was really no need for backwards compatibility, that's because they knew it would be half-assed and tryed to convince you you didn't need it. That should be the next magizine canned.
Back on OPM, Think about it you paid 10 bucks for the demo disks, face it the mag sucked. Yet they still sell "jampacks", remember those. they have better demo's and are like 6 bucks, just buy those if you want demos. And then get a subscription to Game Informer, problem solved. Let's hope

Ziff Davis is for sale - and they don't have their heads screwed on right. So you dum asses - stop putting the disk in the mag and see what happens? Drop the price to $5.99 and see what kind of % of sales you get on the newsstand. Duh!

I'm sure the disk costs lots of money - but we're you charging like $10 for the magazine anyway? Maybe Sony took lots of the cash.

Who knows...bunch of bird brains at Ziff Davis...you've killed a great magazine. What's next?

Well, rest in peace OPM! I think Sony should transforming its official PS3 site into a fully featured online magazine. So instead of just brief info and trailers/screens, they should have proper editors to regularly publish articles, reviews, interviews, exclusive info, demo content, virtual goodies - everything ONLINE! This is the future, and thank me for the greatest idea :)
