Blu ray versus HD-DVD - Image 1Vilhelm sends us a tip about an intriguing little bit of information that could force retailers to turn the tide over to HD DVD as the winner of the format wars. Apparently, Wal-Mart leaked plans to bring in a large number of low-cost HD DVD players for Christmas.

The large shift towards selling low-cost HD DVD players for Christmas could increase HD DVD sales by a staggering amount. Given that studios count on support from huge retailers like Wal-Mart, it stands to reason that if Wal-Mart puts it foot down and chooses one format above the other, then studios will be increasingly pressured to adopt the retailer's choice or stand to lose money by supporting multiple formats.

Why the choice of HD DVD, however, when Blu-ray seems to be selling more? Rob Enderle of Digital Trends weighs in with this important insight:

For Wal-Mart the only real metric is cost... They needed something that could sell for under US$ 200 soon and they needed the lowest cost of the new formats. This is where HD DVD shines, not only had Toshiba agreed to license to low cost manufacturers early on, but HD DVDs are pressed on the same lines that regular DVDs are, they require no major equipment change out and the blanks, when compared to Blu-Ray are less expensive as well.

This made the decision simple, Blu-Ray was just too expensive to make this work and any technical advantages were insignificant against Wal-Mart’s need for the lowest cost offering. For them it is about price and that is where HD DVD clearly has the sustainable advantage.

Looks like the format wars are getting more interesting. As for which one's going to win, it's definitely going to be up to consumers like you to help influence that outcome.

 » Well Crap

Looks like HD has won the war. The ignorant sheep that flock to Wal-mart will buy the new technology in droves.

The poor can have their poor BD wanna be players. The middle class and the rich will have BD players. :)

 » Ignorant Sheep Eh?

How about, people who don't want to spend $600 on a DVD player with slightly better resolution.
Walmart seems to be the only one to understand that yes, we want HD, but we'd rather spend the extra $200-300 we saved on movies, not.... Well, what extra benefits does blue ray have? Thats right, none. Latest headlines show that the HD format is consistantly being upgraded, while the Blue Ray format has consistantly had formatting problems.

 » what extra benefits?

How about uncompressed audio? I've noticed a big difference in the sound - again - HD for consumers who just want something, BluRay for those who notice or want these things. It's all about choice anyways - with the global market we have now, both formats are going to coexist. There will be no "winner" IMHO- at least we should focus so much on competition. Who cares who sells more? I like PS3 others like xBox360 - some like Apple some like Windows others Linux. It's about choices, and what makes you happy. Trying to have the "better" tech, usually ends in dissatisfaction and a desire for that next best thing. Grass always greener, and all that ish...

» Im not arguing the fact of format wars.

I would just like to convey the fact that even though Wal-Mart is the #1 retailer right it is also the sleaziest by nature. Not only do they pay their employees slave wages they dont let them unionize. They put smaller mom and pop shops out of business. They destroy whole towns and bring some cities to their knees. They devalue commercial property when a Wal-Mart is built nearby. I could go on and on. I would never step foot inside a Wal-Mart. I would like all reading this to check out a movie called "Wal-Mart: The high cost of low price".
This movie can be downloaded from most torrent sites, I used piratebay. It is definitly worth watching and will educate you on the dangers of Wal-Mart opening up in your town. Thanks J

 » Blu-Ray could follow suit

The reason they're selling the players so "cheap" is because HD-DVD players naturally cost LESS than Blu-Ray. It's not too unreasonable to think that Blu-Ray will follow suit with players being around the same price.

Also, Blu-Ray has the most companies going for it (and it has the most space).

You also have to consider that most people who buy players such as these at Wal-Mart only go for the cheap stuff...that's what Wal-Mart is known for...cheap items. $300 is not cheap for a typical shopper.

While it is a good price, by the time it actually comes around, it won't be a big deal and it likely won't make any sort of impact.

 » Walmart blows

In Janurary I bought a ps3 and was mad geeked to finally see one in stock. I bought the ps3 from Walmart, keep in mind that it had Ricky Bobby included with it. I thought it strange that it came with Ricky Bobby at first, but paid it little mind until I found someone elses saved games on my newly purchased ps3. Not only that, but the usb charger was missing.

Walmart blows, plain and simple. I took the ps3 back to Walmart, they were giving me trouble until I showed the saved files with my psp. Anbyody who busy hefty electronic items from Walmart is gonna get screwed, plain and simple. U Xbots crack me up, if HD-DVD was so great why didn't Microsoft put it in the 360 Elite? I'm not flaming, 360 is a good system, but people buying a no brand HD-DVD player from Wal Mart of all places is pure hilarity.

As far as I know brand name electronic products have problems, but no name electronics is like buying the mystery meat, u never know what your going to get. You get what you pay for, people may flame Sony, but the bottom line is they make the best electronics in the industry. I have a Sony CD player that still works from 93, how crazy is that? I've ran through two Pioneer CD players since then. So go ahead and buy that Walmart supported no brand HD-DVD player, good luck with that 3 month warranty.

 » just a note

Hey man, I try not to buy into the wars on here. And I own a PS3.

to have all the same features on an xBox360 you will actually end up spending more money - @$1000US.

But check it, if BluRay wins out - xBots can simply by that add-on or whatever the nextgen player is.

We, might be able to buy an add-on too. But being modular as the xBox is, does leave what components they want completely in the consumer's hands.

Peace.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3836296181471292925&q=walmart&hl=en

Sorry the file is not in mp4 format, so no ps3, psp or I-pod downloading. Still a good movie about the anal raping Walmart is doing to this country. Enjoy 8).

 » this is not accurate

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/High-Def_Retailing/Wal-Mart/Hardware/$50_Wal-Mart_HD_DVD_Player:_Fact_or_Fiction/585

Enderle posted a rumor as fact, this is not confirmed with either side and very well could be Blu-Ray players not HD-DVD

» This doesn't end the format wars

I mean they said wal-mart bought 2 million HD DVD players to sell for the holidays because they need to provide a cheaper option. Who knows how many PS3's will be sold by then and during the holiday. If by 2008 there are 8 millions PS3's sold, does that mean there are 8 millions blu ray players sold compared to walmarts 2 million? Blu ray might need to lower the price to counter this move. But I'm not sure this ends the format wars.

 » I work at Walmart's Electronic department..

and yes, I find this as a way for wal-mart to make more money, not a way to promote a technology. Wal-mart has never been known for their quality electronics and will always go for the lowest bidder on the newest stuff... That means low quality product for the consumer. Even if we get quality items, lets say game consoles for example but it can mean any item, if someone were to return an item, are are forced to put it back in the shelf "if there was nothing wrong". It gets even worse in my store that we no longer enforce the return policy. People return many broken 360s all the time and exchange them for new units all the time. If we boot the system and it "works", it gets put back on the shelf. ugh.

My suggestion when shopping for electronics at Wal-mart? Don't shop there. But if you have to, check for factory seal and hope for the best.

If you support HD-DVD, shop elsewhere. Don't feed the machine that lowers everyone's standards.
