Unreal Tournament III - Image 1

Unreal Tournament III may mark the start of tough times for the Xbox 360 as Mark Rein of Epic Games explains that the size of the DVD format for the Xbox 360 are forcing developers to cut down the game. Rein says during the Edinburgh Festival that Epic Games will

... compress some things. But you know, we may have fewer maps on the 360 version... Blu-Ray has definitely given us a lot of legroom.

As developers begin to warm up to the capabilities of each console, the market may soon see a larger demand on data like UT3. This ups the ante quite a bit as this would definitely be a boon for the Blu-Ray, gaining more favor towards the PlayStation 3.

However, data storage is quite easily bypassed with a second disc. This might not bode well for those who own the Core system though, as data may prove too large for a memory card. A Hard Drive would definitely be preferable when transferring between two discs. Might this be the reason behind the "Hard Disk Drive Required" sticker appearing on future 360 games?

» No Bioshock for you and your frame rate dropping machine though

Fisrtly they should release this as min specs being the 20 gig 360, Commodore done exactly the same thing 20 years ago when the half meg users didnt upgrade to 1 meg all they did was a deal with a software company where the biggest released title at that time Dungeon master would only work with 1 meg and after it was released everyone had the 1 meg upgrade..

Since when has Unreal Tournament been a good game anyway, the online ply is rubbish.

PS3 posters on here you should be typng out why there is such bad frame rates on the PS3 games and why Lair looks terrible on the tv demo frame rates are unbelievable and it got a whole 5 out of 10.

Bioshock recives 10 out of 10 from all reviews what a game wow, not on PS3 though proberly wouldnt work without the 80 gig PS3

if only my ps3 didn't have an inferior frame rate. And if only my ps3 had something for anti aliasing. I will admit though, there is something..allure about all those jaggies all over the place. It's kind of a turn on. By the way, UT sucks. Not that I am defending the 360 because I seen this coming but...UT sucks. If this happens with COD4, thats when concern sets in.

Wow dfg...one crappy ported game had low framerates...lets start a flame war.

Sucks you're too poor to afford both systems
   by Shatterdome - 2007-08-15
 » uh duh...

This goes without saying....UT is shipping with a ridiculous amount of MP maps....which most games would just release as "map packs"

Also, it isn't a problem if MS would shaft core users, as they could have a disc with just the MP maps on it, that would then copy them to the HDD....or bypass that and make them downloadable for free...but of course to download something you need a 360 HDD....but you can still play a "core" experience from the main disc.

You better beleive PS3 is going to have to install resources to the HDD for decent load times...BRD is just allowing epic to put all their resources in one spot, easly....but it could be split up into 2 discs....using a common Sony fanboy comment "they are just being lazy"

:P

   Re: catron (Unregistered) - 2007-08-15
 » o wow

your pretty smart, who wants to get a "core" experience. And if they go online with the game will it say : "Were sorry you only paid for 5 maps, please go out and buy a $100 hard-drive so you can play the other 45. thank you and we sincerely hope that your console doesn't over heat while you go buy it " And i dont know about you but i hate swapping discs, it is just annoying. also that raises another question. What if they managed to do a disc swap? then would some 13 year old when it says "please insert the other disc" be a jerk and not put it in so that the match wouldn't start for anyone. Also, BR isnt that much slower than the 360's drive. also remember that some people have a budget and dont own a premium. if Epic allows it to be played fully only by HDD owners it will start a chain reaction to other games meaning other games will do the same thing. These are the times i LOVE owning my PS3.

a lot of us only have the 20 gig though which is only about 15 gigs actually and it seems if we had to do put game stuff on the 360 HDD all the time that we would run out quick, i'm already low as is.

   Re: Stealth! - 2007-08-16
 » Wow @ Shatterdome

The truth hurts doesn't it. Face it this will start a domino effect for all games for 360, i guess now people will see the benefits for having Blu-ray.

You think there is going to be two disc's for the ps3 version wow. Very sad, well i hate to say i told you so, oh wait i don't lol.

PS3 FTW, should i start digging a grave for 360 Now, i think i should.

   Re: Shatterdome - 2007-08-16
 » it's called...

Single player disc and a multi player disc.....there would be no disc swapping, if they were not "lazy"

Also, the extra maps probably put them over by a gig, 2 at max...big whoop I'd have to delete the stranglehold demo to free up the space.....how are you PS3 users enjoying the stranglehold demo ?

And yes, MS already does say "go out and buy a $100 HDD" for downloadable content, or a memory stick that costs $20 less.....so they wouldn't be changing their policy any.....if you want the free gears of war maps, you need an HDD, this would be no different.

Also, i'll laugh when UT3 runs and looks better on 360, but wow, you get some more maps, but a crappier gameplay experience.....wtg...

this is not a problem or a cause for complaint there is the harddrive you know any serious gamer has one and you can always buy one if you have the core system and then there is Ids new engine which can hold 40 gigs of textures on one dvd9 disk I wonder if epic is getting scared not to mention graphics that rival anything on ps3 and 360 this includes gears of war next year the we are going to see what 360 is really capable of, 2008 the year next gen really begins.

I agree... the xbox displays beautiful graphics, but I noticed a few ps3 games look gorgeous on paper but disappoint (Lair). Next year both 360 + ps3 will release quality stuff instead of the rushed feel that most games tend to have.

» lame that it will be limited...

i think its dumb that its limited for people that dont have the premium. this is one of the main reasons why the ps3 is more becuase the hdd now you all 360 fanboys will have to buy an hdd to start experiences some of the newer more advanced games coming out. i think thats disappointing. yeah in the end its the same and you didnt have to pay for it at the begining but its kinda a let down that youd have to buy it to play certain games. at least with the ps3 you knew before hand what your paying for and get the hdd instead of having to pay more to upgrade your exisiting unit to keep playing the games.... seems like having to mod your 360 to avoid the rings of death haha

Didn't those idiots at MS know that they eventually wouldn't be able to fit a high def game on a single dvd? Didn't they have a plan about how to handle this situation when it came up? They should have known they day would come when dvds would be too small. It looks like blu-ray is gonna be paying off for Sony after all.

OMG OMG OMG, UT will be the sucks on 360.

/sarcasm.

Please, qj is always putting some ridiculous spin on things. Why in the world would this make a HDD necessary? To save game saves? Yea, they wont be taking up 64mb + for one game save, trust me. Again, YOU CAN ENABLE HARD DRIVE CACHING ON SYSTEMS WITH A HARD DRIVE AND DISABLE IT FOR THOSE WITHOUT IF THE GAME IS PROGRAMMED THAT WAY. The only thing this means is that the 360 version may be on two discs, which again, means you might actually have to move o_o....a daunting feat I know.

Can't wait for the PS3 fanboys :), "Z0mG this means 360 will never sell !!!1111oneoneone, hard drive is needed even though Ken Kutaragi spent years denying the need for a hard drive!!!"

   Re: Mohammad (Unregistered) - 2007-08-16
 » Another thing

Since when are all of the maps in a game good? 90% of Halo 2's maps suck ass. Same for most of the previous Unreal games, many of the maps blow hard. Obviously, IF Epic does have to cut a few, they are going to give the 360 version as many of the good maps as they can. Who cares about losing a few bad maps?

I know this isn't a bad thing for the 360, and I don't even have one. Shows how smart some people on QJ are, like Spectre and Stealth. Sony looking into the future my ass, they took a HUGE gamble with Blu-Ray, they had no clue it would succeed, and for the most part it still hasn't. This Unreal announcement in hardly the end of the 360 and DVD

   Re: Spectre (Unregistered) - 2007-08-16
 » LOL Mohammad

You must be oblivious to things around you. BDs are outselling HD DVDs by who knows how much. Universal is contemplating going multi-format, and once it happens, every major movie publisher will be on Sony's format. The biggest HD movie for both formats thus far is 300, which has sold better on BD despite having less extras. Sure, Sony doesn't know what they're doing...that's why DVDs are the standard medium for storage today. As far as looking in to the future is concerned, the PS3 will have a 10 year lifespan. If the PSone had an 11 year lifespan despite having outdated graphics, I don't see why the PS3 won't follow suit.

   Re: Mohammad (Unregistered) - 2007-08-16
 » Sorry

But I'm afraid you're the one who is oblivious. The adoption rate of high-def movie formats is till extremely low, not sure the exact figure but last I heard it was still less than 10%, i.e. 90% of people still don't care even two years after BD and HD-DVD came out and are just happy with their DVD player. It was not "looking into the future", it was a gigantic guess, and the PS3 will NOT have a 10 year lifespan. Count on it. The PS4 will be out not long after the next Xbox, in 4-6 years.

But I'm sure you'd disagree, since most PS3 fans as stupid as you take whatever Kaz Hirai and Kutaragi say as law.

I've noticed that in most of your comments you try to sound like you know what you're talking about, but it's pretty obvious you don't have a clue. And judging by the ratings your comments get people seem to agree with me. Maybe you should just stop commenting?

Silence is bliss, no doubt. I wonder where Ms. Cummin Cents and AxSxSxMxIxLxK is...I can see their argument now.

"Why have it on BD when it's going to be installed on the HDD anyways? I'd rather buy it for $60 on HDDVD then pay an extra $10 for extras since it's going to be THAT GOOD. Any true gamer should be rich and have a 20 GB HDD for $100 and is willing to pay for extra content, which comes free on the PSux3. I am a true gamer since I own both, but will get it for the XBlowx711 since it's a FPS machine."

OR

"I was never looking forward to this game anyways. Losing this isn't all that bad, since it's not exclusive and the PS3 version will be better. Halo 3 and BIosucks is enough to tied me over along 34234234232 other FPS that play the same."

I do think that DVD-9 is too small for storage on Next Gen games. Dont get me wrong compression helps but development is alot cheaper and smoother if you dont have to worry about space. Large texture files 2k x 2k take up lots of room, and there are very few good lossless compressions. And of those compressions very few are realtime (ie format compression opposed to archived compression)

FMV movies are also trouble, unless you do scripted ingame footage.

Very few games will require more than DVD9 but for those few its worth having bluray

The funny thing is TWO PS3s have already been dropped the 20 and 60 gig version so how long will it be before we read so other rubbish like this game will only work on 80 gig PS3s so you will have to buy another HD etc.

MS are obviously going to drop the core soon anyway so it matters not as they know most people have HD and will also be getting the 120 gig drive or the Elite around the launch of Halo and Bioshock...

» Advancement is what its all about (or should be)

Remember that one time that disk 2 of 3 on the PS1 got lost somewhare and couldnt find it and had completly screwed the game over because you need "three" disks to play it? not only that why is microsoft's xbox360 always involve you having to spend even MORE money to get anything done when its involved? how long do you have to wait to have a game that is 30 or 40 Gigs compressed to two DVD 9 disks uncompressed then TRANSFERRED to your HDD? how long will this take again? and even with a hundred Gigs of data storage youll just may use up all of that space with only 10 HDD only xbox360 games, then have to buy ANOTHER harddrive from microsoft that have a set storage while a ps3 can get a 100 Gig PC harddrive for LESS. it whould be like me having to buy another memory card for my ps2 because all of my saves from my 40 ps2 games cant fit on one card! im sure the framerate issue for the PS3 can be resolved for in due time because its unique architecture look at how killzone 2 and UTC3 look and the framerate is still good. I think that if you can make a good looking game for the PS3, you as a programmer just expanded your knowlage so can work with new better technology and make a better looking and more complicated game and stop limiting yourself to a tried and true hardware that may reach its limit a two years or so down the road...

And see, i diditnt even had to mention the defective rate OR the disk scratching issue through all of this
