While Universal values the close partnership we have shared with Toshiba, it is time to turn our focus to releasing new and catalog titles on Blu-ray. The path for widespread adoption of the next-generation platform has finally become clear.
Universal will continue its aggressive efforts to broaden awareness for hi-def´s unparalleled offerings in interactivity and connectivity, at an increasingly affordable price. The emergence of a single, high-definition format is cause for consumers, as well as the entire entertainment industry, to celebrate. |

Well that's the end of that. They should have done this several month ago, but they kept the format war going for a bit lnger needlesly.
Still good to see that they've finally come arround. Not like they had a choice though, since Toshiba decided to discontinue producing HD-DVD players.
There's really no other choice, they either went to blu-ray or they dont release HD stuff.
can people finally agree that microsoft move to go hd dvd really hurt them and now the ps3 is the superior console
Microsoft will never be hurt, theres too many idiots in the world that just keep giving them more and more money.
While MS users are sure to be sore, this really has nothing to do with consoles. Aside from the hundreds of thousands of worthless 360 HD-DVD units.
with ISO. but I'd rather say that the PS3 is the superior console in HD.
First: Microsoft will be hurt. Toshiba will take most the heat for this, but both corporations will lose millions of dollars because of their choice to back HD DVD. They are both huge corporations and this is obviously not a deathblow by any means, but keep in mind that Sony is bigger than microsoft and will continue to make money off Blu-ray for a long time.
Second: While this is a different area of entertainment, it has a lot to do with consoles. Everybody forgets the fact that until the last months of 2007, everybody (including Microsoft) was bashing Sony for integrating Blu-ray into PS3. The problem was that the console was more expensive because of it. This "obviously" made the Xbox 360 with its HD DVD player add-on an excellent way to upgrade to the new video format. Suddenly, when the format war ends and everybody decides that next generation HD doesn't play a role in the console wars. While I don't expect anything huge to come out of this in regards to sale numbers and games, Sony will definitely gain momentum. Also, don't forget about the 200, 000 people that wasted money just for the 360 add-on.
Third: the PS3 is not the superior console in HD, it is the only console in HD. I'm sorry, but everybody knows that nobody is going to turn to online downloading services for HD content.
Sorry scarface but you obviously have no clue as to what you are talking about.
First: If you think "millions" can hurt MS then you have a lot of learning to do.
Second: MS already "hurt" themselves when they decided to not include the drive IN the 360 and allow games to be developed for it. Even if they did integrate the HD-DVD drive and now that HD-DVD is dead, it wouldn't matter. The unit would STILL have HD games. The only difference would be MS would be the only company pressing HD-DVD discs. It was a win-win for them and they decided to skip it. That doesn't "hurt" them now, it "hurt" them THEN.
Third: While the 360 is a joke when it comes to 1080p, it can handle 720p just fine. Which means it is in FACT an HD unit. Granted it's missing HD audio (another joke) but that's besides the points. That's what makes the PS3 a "superior" HD unit. HD is not only about videos.
"First: If you think "millions" can hurt MS then you have a lot of learning to do." - Sorry, I did not realize that Microsoft wouldn't get "hurt" by losing millions. As I mentioned before, this is by no means a deathblow, maybe not even a hard hit. However, I could care less how big of a corporation Microsoft, losing millions still means taking a loss on the technology. Saying that it isn't would be like saying that Sony (which is a bigger corporation that Microsoft as I'm sure you know) did not take a hit after Beta failed. I understand your argument that Microsoft is too big for this to even matter, but the fact is that they made a gamble and lost because of it. If the HD DVD was included in the Xbox 360 unit, the worldwide sales of HD DVD would be nearly TWENTY times as much as they currently are. That is a big deal when you are in the middle of a format war. There are 10 million Blu-ray players out there that were sold as a part of the PS3. Heck I even bought it without fully believing that the technology would prevail.
What I am trying to say is, if you are going to back a format, do it properly. I personally think that this war would be far from over right now if the HD DVD drive was integrated into the Xbox 360. At the same time, why not offer 1080p as an option on your console? If there is better technology available, why not use it? Waiting a year just to bring the console on par with the capabilities of other companies and calling it "Elite" is a fancy way of telling everybody that bought their console before that they got stiffed.
If Warner Bros. decision in January was to go HD DVD exclusive, it would not have had the same catastrphic fallout in respect to Blu-Ray. The fact that so many players had already been sold as a part of PS3 would have at least kept the format alive (maybe even still in the fight). We would not have seen studios and retailers changing to HD DVD is rapidly as they did to Blu-Ray. I believe this is a part of why Sony did not face the same problems as Toshiba after Paramount went exclusive.
Analysts have already started pitching their two sense. I know using Michael Patcher's argument is like using projections straight from Sony, but I honestly agree with his point that this will make most people that were still deciding between a 360 and PS3 lean toward PS3 because it comes with a standard video player built in. Hell I'll even entertain the fact that most people that have a PS3 will no longer be interested in investing money into a 360. I don't think it works the other way around though.

I certainly agree with all of that! All of that is the exact reason I've been calling the 360 nothing more then a Xbox v1.5.
The 360 is nothing more then SAME GEN. Nothing about it is NextGen. It was like upgrading your computer from Core2 to Core2Duo. No big deal.
Even harsher words could be said about the Wii. The GC was nothing more then LastGen and the Wii is CurrentGen. Again, nothing NextGen about. But it brought Nintendo fans online (FINALLY) and for some odd reason I've had a BLAST playing all my Wii games. So on that note, it's not all about the hardware....
and thus the long and needless war has finaly ended.
I wish we could put this petty thing aside now. For the goons out there, how does this hurt Microsoft? Last time I checked their software came on DVD-9, the HD-DVD drive was an OPTIONAL add on. Anyway, be glad, it's over, the better format has won and now people only have one stable choice when it comes to a HD format, so HD sales should start to pick up. More people buy, the more companies will start making the players, the faster the players will come down in price. We've got a stable and very good HD format now that can only get better and cheaper. :)
It is good for consumers since now they can plunk down their hard earned cash for an HD player that will be supported by the industry. :D
This makes me a little bit happier to own a ps3(always been happy i bought it). Sucks for all those people who went with HD-DVD though...
p.s. ISOHaven, why all of your posts are described as "WTF!?!?!?!?!?!" cause to me it seems a little awkward/extreme when some of your comments don't seem like they need wtf as a description.
"WTF!?!?!?!?!" was his old name before he had to register to this site I think.. So he puts his old name as his subject every post now.
rest...in...peace !
It isn't like the HD DVD players stop working now, all people who own them can still watch their HD DVDs, the only problem is that their wont be any new movies coming out on HD DVD
Sure, they can keep a $500+ machine to watch what few HD-DVD titles they have. Except for MOST people audio/video inputs in thier entertainment system are few to not enough. Now they need to add a BR player. The average person can't handle that many HD type components. Not without getting into expensive switches and so forth.
You hit the nail on the head ISOHaven, what good is a HD DVD player a year from now when all the new releases are on Bluray and the HD DVD adopters are still watching the same old movies. My advice would be to sell it now, who knows you might get lucky and find some poor sap who still thinks HD DVD is the next big thing and will actually give you good money for it. Wishfull thinking though.
This should mean Heroes will appear on BluRay, yay!
Just waiting for Paramount to see sense now then...
it has slim slot disc drive thingy(like ps3)
and it has blu ray!!!
( no 1 cares i kno lol but i let u's kno how it is)
hope they now put the transformers movie on bluray!!!
feel sorry for the folk who bought HD-DVD players though, but, if you take a gamble........
Live on PS3. and R.I.P HD Players.
All 3 "Lord of the Rings" on, that's pretty sweet or Star wars.
PS3 forever...man.
