Xbox 360 - Image 1We all know how serious a lot of you are about this generation's console cycle, and this blogger was personally shocked when he heard of a little contraption called the Xbox 360 Ultimate. Upon reading the post in Neogaf where the rumor originated, however, it seemed doubtful that there was fire beneath the smoke.

It was a little tough deciding whether to blog about this one or not due to the nature of the content, but I thought some of you will see it as comic relief in the very list. You can read the post in the read link below.

The information that an Xbox 360 Ultimate will be out in the future allegedly came from a GameStop employee who says that the new package has both an HDMI port and an HD-DVD drive to enable it to compete with the Sony PlayStation 3 and Blu-ray.

When asked what about all the people who bought earlier versions of the Xbox 360, the GameStop employee said they'll be fine and that "the HD-DVD drive just makes it more HD."

Unfortunately, the GameStop employee also stated a few things that some of you may find flimsy and cause you to doubt his knowledge of what he's talking about. In any case, just see the read link and tell us what you think. It isn't the world's most credible news, but it sure kills time if you're bored.

Really is M$ this stupid?

 » why bother?

they are too late, with everyone shelling out for the elite, then they are realeasing a new bundle, wow. Blu-ray has basically won, so not much sense in including the drive. unless its to play games. And also, if i bought the elite, and i heard about this, i would be mad. Right when i bought something new, its alreeady not the latest thing?

 » Re-launch?

This is getting out of hand M$. First you botch the hardware. Then bone the customers. Go back on your word. Say the Core is here to stay. Phase out the Core. Release 3 more SKU's (Elite, Halo3, 300) and now this.

How many tries at launching this thing will it take for people to smarten up and just get a PS3. I'm on my third 360 and I've yet to have ONE hiccup with my launch PS3.

They didn't release a new SKU. They just launched the 360 in 2007. Half a year AFTER the competition.

 » 360ftw, noob!!

MS has only had 3 versions of the Xbox 360 (Core, Premium, and Elite), along with the ps3 (20GB, 60BG, and 80GB) so what youre saying just makes you look like a dumbass.

And just for the record, my PS3 freezed up all the time, especially when exiting the browser.

Have fun waiting till 2009 for any games to play on PhailSystem 3!!

why on earth would you use the ps3 web browser?? are you stupid, the web browser on any console sucks ass.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-08-13
 » .

Another case of PS3 fans caring more about crap that 360 owners don't.

I'm perfectly happy without HDMI. I don't need it, I knew it didn't have it and the PS3 did, and I bought a 360 anyway.

Ring of death is an inconvience, but MS pays and it isn't a big deal. I've never had that problem, or any others with my console.

How is improving the console a bad thing? Adding HDMI, new cooler chips, price cut, that's just what the 360 needed and will help it compete in the long run. New features are nice, but don't make my old version obsolete.

I think this is just a rumor, I don't think there should be more than 3 versions of XBOX. I do think there should be WiFi built into the elite though. Now that the premium has HDMI, the elite needs something new to make it stand out.

 » More Ideas

That would be good in some ways if you could play your DVD-9 games on the same drive and watch HD-DVDs with it too. Or they could make games for the HD-DVD format at the current price and any games on the DVD-9 format would be lower in price. Another option would be if they made newer games on HD-DVD on one side with extra content and DVD-9 on the other just like they currently do with some of the newer movies! Tons of options. If the rumor is true that is but it's probably a dud. I don't trust what a lot of these people say anyway because a lot of time talking to them you find out they know less you you anyhow.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-08-13
 » .

It would cause too many problems to release games on HD-DVD now. They would need to make 2 versions of games (I'm talking only the really big games that need more than one disc.) For one, what if a DVD9 version wasn't in stock? What if parents got confused and bought the wrong version? If the external HD-DVD drive could load games that could lead to easy piracy and MS probably wouldn't like that.

No XBOX games on HD-DVD this gen.

 » Aox YOU f***in idiot.

i really should start reading names before i read comment Aoc your an idiot who should get no respect even when your talking just on the behalf of the 360 you still sound like a moron. Core, premium and elite. its all the same console just missing ***** MS thought they would never have to put in the begining. Sony took out the 20gig because nobody wants it. Smart. Every ps3 can easily replace there HDD for a good price online. MS releases garbage that RRODs every time.

Getting out of hand what you mean like Sony dropping TWO models in the first year ? , then removing the PS2 hardware and chucking a 20 gig bigger harddrive and charging $100 for it lmao, or the PS2 dvd fault which affected millions of PS2 owners which bit do you think is any different between the two companys then?..

I have no problems with MS improving the hardware. All you people that get offended by SKU revisions need to grow up. All consoles are going to get revisions this generation. Enjoy what you got, you bought it with the specs listed on the box. As long as all the games made for your platform play on your SKU version you have nothing to complain about.

 » HAHA

Wow awesome MS you truly showing the love. You and your legion of xbox fantards spewing BS about the Sony making bigger harddrive systems and yet you come out with this. Talk about being hypocrites.

Though let me say this the reason why the sales aren't going up is cause anyone who wanted a xbox already got one and same for Wii, i believe my buddy Quixand said this too, and the PS3 fans are just waiting for the creme filling to make there system sweet. And when it does it will sell like hotcakes. It seems MS has made too many mistakes for a 2year old system.

Oh and lets just estimate the cost of the Xbox 360 Ultimate Price For US $679 which its cause of HDD. Euro price 569. Wow its truly ultimate i guess that means no one will pay the money for it lol.

No it will be more expensive if this is true by the time it comes out PS3 will be 399 maybe less so basically it would be more. So thanks for agreeing with me

Sony drops price and removes features (they did it on the ps2 as well removing ports, etc) such as hardware emulation. Meanwhile Microsoft lowers their price and add features.
The latter is better for consumers.

Simpsons/300/Halo sku's is special limited edition , does not affect standard sku. Internally its the same console. Smarten up people.

its also a rumor that is likely not true.

why would they release a 360 with a built in HD if the standalone HD isnt even selling well? this rumor is definately bunk

You do know that the 80gb ps3 has all of the same card slots on it. they didnt remove any of them. they just added a bigger hdd, and removed the emotion engine to make it more cost effective. They still have an over 90% Backwards compatibility. yea they stated a few more games might not work and some will lose some features like online play but you still get over 2000 BC titles to play with it.

I don't think this is legit information. Microsoft has shown on interest in packing in the hd dvd player since it's "not proven" yet....

I know a lot of people that work at GameStop and I think this person is just trying to get attention for his store since he "knows things straight from Microsoft"....

Don't believe this, Microsoft is focused on making the white and black systems equal so by christmas time the only difference is the hard drive.

   by retailback (Unregistered) - 2007-08-13
 » Look what was said

360 upconverts; a HD-DVD drive is pure HD, so your videos are recorded in 720 - 1080p (HDMI is the only way to have 1080p on a 360). This guy is not knowledgeable enough to answer any questions for the way he responded to the questions.
Cores have not been seen in some shops for almost 4 months now, so the pro and elites are the models and old pros are being sold before the new ones (w/ HDMI) can be put on shelves.

A Wii is not "next-gen" since it does not have next generation graphics and on game-play instead. PS3 and 360 are the competing and the WII is just like the Green Party in presidential elections. The term, next-gen, is thrown around too much as a selling point and not used by those who know what the facts are.

For the people who are saying bad things about Microsoft because of the Xbox Ultimate, it's just a damn rumour that some stupid GameStop retailer said. There's absolutely no way that Microsoft would release this console and have HD-DVD games only.

Why is it that almost all news about updating 360 hardware most posts are by PS3 owners ?, what difference does it make to you, grow up or go work for charity or something, the Wii is kicking the 360 and especially the PS3s ass but they dont go round posting crap on all the 360 news, so apart from you have no confidence in your system I can see no other reason why you would post on this news if you dont intend to buy one etc..

   by ???? (Unregistered) - 2007-08-15
» hmmm lots of idiot fanboys

Yea if you guys read it it has only been a rumor so far. if M$ were to release the ultimate SKU with hdmi and hddvd it would might cost more than 499.99 depending on how big the hdd is. if it's a 20 gb than 599.99 80 gb ps3 can still be the better by since it have more hdd space and all the same features the 60 gb has except the emotion chip. and you can get firmware updates for the backwards compatibility. if its the 120 than i would have to say it would cost at least 549.99. but it wouldn't have wireless on it so you will have to by the adapter for a $100 more. And with the ps3 you can upgrade the hdd anyways as long its a 2.5 inch laptop hdd. and i found some 120-160 hdd on newegg for a hundred or less. i not here to say which is better. i own a 360 and my friend has a ps3 and i played around on both console and seen all the features both consoles have. thats up to you to decide. but i would give the ps3 that slight edge because of its has more capabilities like its flash drives, usb keyboards and mouse and you can rip music on your mp3 players that you cant do with the 360. Remember up to you to decide which console is better.
