Hands down, just like what Epic Games head honcho Mark Rein says all the time, Unreal Tournament is more about the mods than frantic first-person shooter out of the box. The most recent user-created mod we came across, called UT2D Super Mario, flipped Unreal Tournament 3 to 2D and took the novel idea further by setting it on a very familiar backdrop.

As you would have guessed by now, the mod in question is the original Super Mario Bros. revived in Unreal Tournament 3. Created by FrontAXL, UT2D Super Mario is a 2D map complete with NES Mario elements such as power-up blocks and classic sound effects. It's currently in beta stage, but playable enough to quench your thirst for 2D blood baths.

UT2D Super Mario is available for both Sony PS3 and PC versions of Unreal Tournament 3. You can download it from the release thread which you can find by clicking on the "via" link, or watch footage embedded below.

Nice mod, if only they would have shown a bit more of the upper part of the level.

Nope, it is 2D, since the characters are in a side-scrolling environment, notice the characters cannot walk into the screen, if you know what I mean, there's no depth at all. It's just x and y, there's no z axis.
