 GamePolitics brings word of even more potential game legislation today. Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS) introduced a bill to the US Senate yesterday that would, to quote the bill,...prohibit the distribution or sale of video games that do not have age-based content rating labels [and] prohibit the sale or rental of video games with adult content ratings to minors... The text of the legislation isn't out yet, however, so the details are still somewhat sketchy. That said, the bill currently has no sponsors and has been referred to the Senate's Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. If you will remember, a couple of days back another important piece of videogame legislation was signed in New York. One of the law's mandates was that "games sold at retail disclose the ratings obtained from the gaming industry's voluntary rating system." Such a law could provide a legal precedent for part of the legislation mentioned above. Related Articles: |

I know that this is already being done so it sounds to many of you as stupid to make this an official law but you gotta think outside the box. The bill states videogames as a whole, so this is manly to target online distribution and rental of videogames which most of the times receives no age based ratings or can't really secure that the rental is being made by peoeple eligible by age.

all this does is make it an official law
nintendo, microsoft, and sony all make it a requirement to have ESRB rating and no AO content can be published on their systems.
Therefore there is no point to this then to waste taxpayers' money.

Let's say you develop a pc game and want to sell it from your website. Now, you would possibly have to go through the ESRB to get it rated before you can distribute it in the US.
What about Flash games that you play online? Do those now have to be rated? How about foreign import games where the rating is different than in the US?

There was another one of these Jack Thompson-esque stings on local channel WMAR TV Channel 2 here in Baltimore, and the next day, some idiot who is an editorial writer for baltimoresun.com (who is a Channel 2 media partner) was accusing the video game industry of being more interested in protecting their profits then they were interested in keeping certain games out of the hands of brats. She had said something like, "The industry fights the laws that restrict game sales in order to protect themselves from a M rated game sales drop." The Baltimore Sun and their website was always run by idiots. My idiot step-uncle, Dan Connolly is their head sports writer.
