Most people think that flying cars are stuff of fiction. We really haven't seen anything like the Back to the Future's De Lorean or the Jetsons' space car. While some are highly skeptical about the possibility - and practicality - of a flying car, there are still some who dare to dream.

Meet Vernon Porter and Clarence Kissell. Two septuagenarians (72 and 70 respectively) from Dallas who designed a flying car - or at least a fiberglass mock up of it - in their garage. So far they've invested around US$ 70,000 on their pet project, but budget-wise, they are still short of over a million dollars.

According to their design, their flying car will sport a 232 hp Mazda motor and a Wankel engine with a propeller. It's a three wheeler (hence the need for a motorcycle license when grounded) and the designers comment that it probably won't handle as well as a conventional car.

Putting that aside, wouldn't it be cool to be able to drive one? Bummer that we'd surely need pilot licenses, too. Bad news for those who had trouble with Driver's Ed. Anyway, the designers are virtually on a race against time to get the job done - as obviously they aren't getting any younger. The project's not really a very popular one with the big boys of the automobile and aircraft industries as it isn't really practical to put into production. But that doesn't mean the designer grandpas should quit on their dreams.
