Turnabout: PSP first place in Japan thanks to mint green model - Image 1The PSP takes a fresh turn: thanks to the release of the mint green PSP, the Sony handheld has taken top spot in Japan's hardware charts for the week ending on March 2.

Although the handheld's been popular in Japan, it's only ever beat the Nintendo platforms on a number of occasions. One of the more notable ones was during the release of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.

We've also been tracking the movement of the Nintendo DS for a few weeks now. The DS was bumped off its usual spot in first place at the second week of February. It's been having trouble gaining back its momentum ever since.

This week, the Nintendo DS is in its second week in third place, after a brief spot in second place two weeks ago. Here's the rest of the figures for Japan's hardware sales for the week of March 2:

  • PSP: 73,706
  • Wii: 64,535
  • DS Lite: 51,922
  • PS3: 13,520
  • PS2: 10,986
  • Xbox 360: 2,282
