a Terabyte of Space

It's been in development for quite a while now, but Hitachi is expected to finally crank out a 1-terabyte hard drive for people to use on their computers before the end of the year.

Yes folks, terabyte.

1,000 gigabytes.

That's the whole run of Survivor (from the days when Richard Hatch was naked to the present) coupled with every episode of Beverly Hills 90210 and Baywatch ever made on your desktop right there. Why you'd want naked Richard Hatch, Baywatch and 90210 on your computer is up to you though.

Unlike the previously mentioned terabyte hard drive "Yellow Box" of Anthology Solutions, which really was inside a box and weighed 14 pounds, this hard drive will be 3.5 inches in diameter and will probably weigh a lot less. Hitachi hopes that people will start using them for their personal or home server needs.

The news is a perfect milestone, really, as September 13, 2006 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the hard drive. From 5 MB on a giant platter to a terabyte on a disc, that's a lot of history right there.

 » Exactly, #1

Listen to what the guy with the broken caps lock key has to say, especially when it comes to graphics cards. Right now there is not a single graphics card on the market that is 100% compatable with Vista right now. Even the ones that say "Vista Ready" or "Vista Compatable" only support the Aerio interface, NOT DirectX 10. Cards with these labels are just a gimmick to get you to spend more money on a new one; essentialy any graphics card with at least 128MB memory will support Aerio in Vista.

My suggestion is to wait until 2007 when DX10 is released to buy a new GPU; however, don't fret if you just dropped $600+ for that shiny new GeForce 7950 GX2, since most games made after 2007 should downgrade the graphics a bit to support comps with DX9 cards; you just won't be able to play that game at it's highest potential with all the bells and whistles that DX10 card users get to enjoy.

 » Adding to that thought...

Another reason why it's good to wait is because since Vista demands more graphics power than any OS ever, the demand for graphics cards should go up, hence prices should go down, making that dream of yours to own the latest and greatest a step closer to becoming reality.

» A warm word of thanks to asdf.

Thank you, asdf, for pointing that out.

By the way, have you heard of the phrase, "rounding down?" It's something people do with particular figures when the number itself is unruly to type or does not look good on the printed page. 1000 gigs is a relative rounding down for that particular purpose.

One last thing. To retard, in its original context, means "to delay or hinder the advance or development of." I hope my comment has increased your knowledge and lessened your retardation in the fields of word usage.

» computers will need to get a lot faster too just to keep up

imagine searching or virus scanning through a 1 terabyte hard drive. that would take forever. its like going through 10 gb of files, times 100. leaving your comp on overnight wouldn't even work. ZOMFG!
