Like a carpet dood, it so carnales esse

Since you've already seen the Tekken Dark Resurrection Dust ball advert, this isn't exactly breaking news, so tag this under off-topic. It's just that we're a bit curious about CVG's (computerandvideogames.com) befuddlement over the Sony's latest Dust-ball ad campaign.

Here's a pertinent bit of their take on the advert they've seen:

You may well already have been irritated by the ads on TV, which end with the baffling tagline "PSP - it's like carpet you can watch outside". Which of course is meant to symbolise the... erm... no, it makes no sense to us.

Well, it is not supposed to symbolize anything. It is supposed to be funny. It is basically two dust balls with Mexican accents acting "teh stupid." As CVG has said, Sony has as of late, made a series of quite underwhelming adverts as of late. (Except for that PS3 baby advert that still scares the bejesus out of some of us here at QJ. Why? Don't ask.) Something that's offbeat in a manner that actually makes us laugh(sometimes) is perhaps welcome.

Or perhaps CVG is right, and as some of you who have left comments on the previous article has said, it's just plain lame.

Judging from the comments you guys left on the previous Dust ball article, some of you guys hate the campaign, some of you found it hilarious. So here's a question to those who found it funny: What's the "punch" in the punchline, that the ones who are underwhelmed are missing?

The point of any advert is to raise the products profile, to get you talking about it and ultimatley buying it.

So love it or hate it the advert is doing it's job, well on at least 2 out of 3 counts anyway.

 » Underwhelming?

How have Sony's ads been underwhelming? I think they've done a fantastic job. Just compare their ads to the ***** that M$ and Nintendo put out.

All their (nintendo + microsoft) ads suck, but at least they don't piss me off like psp's ads do.

what if the dust balls are honduran? or from chile? or puerto rico? or anywhere south of mexico?!??! would the still have a "mexican" accent? they have a LATIN AMERICAN ACCENT YOU ASS....they pay you to sound ignorant?

 » Point taken...

Although... I used to do a lot of volunteer work and have met a lot of people; I have friends from Brazil, Chile, Honduras, and Argentina. They don't sound like these dustballs. Give the author a break - while it may have been more "politically correct" to have said Latin American or Central American, it wasn't absolutely "moronic" to think that they sounded *stereotypically* Mexican. That's just my opinion though, just like how you're entitled to your own. Some people, like this author, describe accents by referring to a *stereotyped* nation - and that's appropriate because the nation matters more than the continent (I remember my classmate in high school from Taiwan who would get mad if people said he had an "Asian" accent). But some people also don't like to stereotyped, and they, like you, prefer to describe an accent more generally. Neither practice is necessarily "moronic" or "ignorant." Can't we all just get along? :)

 » Come on ...

The basic concept of all the PSP advertisements, be it the dustballs, the squirrels, or whatever, is that the PSP is suited for all people for all situations. Think of it this way, it's a videogame machine, a movie player, a music player, a GPS system, a internet surfing device, and thanks to the beauty of homebrew, practically any thing else you want it to be. It's everything that you could or would normally do indoors that you can do outside.

It's basically being advertised as something that can do everything, be it whatever that is. For dustballs, they are always around carpet, so in this case it's portable carpet. For squirrels, they are always running around for nuts, so in this case, it's portable nuts.

Although some of them are not too funny, some are not that bad either, and like someone said earlier, positive or not, they get people talking and thus increase the popularity of the system, any publicity is good publicity, or so they say.

And just a note, you can't say that all the commercials are stupid, come on, the one with the squirrels, playing with his nut, that's just funny just for the fact it's controversial for the "sexual implications".

My take on it is more that, until now, real gaming (the sort on consoles) has been an activity that has been done only inside. And now, with the PSP, you can take that gaming outside. And so the connection with what's being talked about on the Ad is that, for example, the fuzz ball used to look at the carpet inside; but now they don't need to stay inside to do it, they can take the carpet with them.

I haven't actually seen the ad, but perhaps someone who's playing on a PSP looks like they're staring at the carpet, due to the position you hold the PSP in. Holding any other way would soon make my arms ache. Therefore you can watch the carpet outside. :o)

Only children under 4 should find this funny. I just cant see how talking balls of fluff is funny? Maybe if they were something game-related then it would be understandable.

 » bad article:S

these ads are really old and they are really good!

and I thing Sportacus 10 has a point in what he's saying, you should whatch the one with the squirrels too and you'll notice a patern!

 » It IS just lame.

The talking pube commercials are annoying as hell and make me embarrassed to own a PSP. They aren't in any way, shape, or form, "good".

 » So...

personally, i like the adverts

what i dont get is this whole debate on them. there adverts simple as

does an advert for anti aging cream, with all its anti oxidants and what no, make me want to buy it?
no

do these ads make me want to buy a psp. (well i have one, but if i didnt)
then no

many companies realise that tv ads arnt what they used to be, and they have to find better ways of getting through to the public

as it has been said. the adverts are made to make you talk about them. not only these psp ads, but the black and white ones
(ya know the ones that were supposed to be racist?)

they all got us talking, and thats what they want. simple as

(ya know Ninty did the same black and white ad, but with cartoons, no fuss going on there)

 » squirrels are better

personally i am a big fan of the "nut you can play with outside", not so big into watching carpet. i can't help but think of a TON of dirty things to add right now:)

 » Who Cares

Who cares if it is lame. Does it catches the audience's attention. Must be a yes cause people are talking about it. Some people may think it is lame, but the whole point of advertising is to leave the consumer with something to think of. Are you thinking about what is says read this?
