Taleban attacks force Afghan mobile companies to shut down - Image 1In Afghanistan, mobile companies have been following an unconventional practice from the hours of 5 p.m. until 7 a.m. Due to several threats issued by the Taliban movement, these companies have been forced to shut down operations at night to avoid attacks from the real-life terrorist group.

The threats were issued a month ago, when the Taliban accused mobile companies for working in conjunction with NATO troops to target them. Since then, up to ten mobile phone towers have been attacked, six of them completely destroyed.

Currently, the four Afghan mobile phone companies have been complying with the Taliban's demands to shut down operations every night. However, telecommunications ministry spokesman Abdul Hadi Hadi has been asking the government to resist the Taliban pressure.

This is slowly becoming a concern among many of the Afghans living in the affected areas. Since mobile phones are the sole means of communication in some of the more remote regions, many are expressing complaints about the inconvenience this situation is causing.
