The phishy World of Warcraft email message - Image 1"Blizzard" says your World of Warcraft account has been suspended...not. That, according to Symantec, is one of the latest phishing scams being conducted by unscrupulous parties seeking to clean out your WoW account.

In response to this, Symantec has issued a warning regarding this latest scam: an e-mail message is sent to WoW players informing them that their account has been temporarily suspended, and that they need to verify some details. That's when the phisher asks for their password via this page: http://wow-europe.good*******.eu/servicehttps3A2F2Fwwwwoweu

The thing to note is that the anti-phishing warning has been left intact on the actual fraudulent e-mail as a sort of ironic self-contradiction. The lesson: always make sure that you're on Blizzard's official page before you actually log in.

In closing, Symantec mentioned that there are only four places where you should ever type your WoW password:

  1. The World of Warcraft game login screen.
  2. The Account Management page on the official site (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/account/)
  3. The World of Warcraft Armory page (https://www.wowarmory.com/login.xml).
  4. The official World of Warcraft forums (http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com)

I got one of these notices a couple months ago, and the URL looked a lot more legitimate than the one mentioned in the article. I don't remember precisely what it was, but it was along the lines of...

www.europe-worldofwarcaft.com

The only way I was certain that it had nothing to do with me is the mention of "Europe." I've TRIED logging into the official WoW Europe forum, and my account and password aren't recognized. This being the case, the Europe branch has no idea I even HAVE an account... meaning that they wouldn't even know how to begin suspending the account they have no record of.

Thank you. You raised an important point: it always helps to take the time to pause for a moment and think about things. A little common sense goes a long way. :)
