The Slamdance Film Festival in Utah is more than a film festival. There's also the Guerilla Gamemaker Competition, a representation of independent game development with little (or no) budget that explores the limits of game design, vision, and social meaning and impact. One of the titles in the festival, Super Columbine Massacre RPG (or SCMRPG for short), was pulled out of the festival a few days ago.

While SCMRPG is a PC game, this article is cross-posted on several QJ blogs because the topics apply to all of us. The question here is this: "If a game is about a massacre or another disturbing topic, is it automatically bad?" Let's see. We'll talk about three things: whether games like this should be made, whether people should be allowed to play them, and whether the game itself is good or bad.

Can games be used to explore important social events? We're talking about Columbine massacre here, where students killed other students. You're exploring a serious and disturbing social event that will upset many people. I'll make up some examples so you can see how far the envelope can go: Super World Trade Center 911 RPG, A.D. 33: Jesus Must Die RPG, 1968 My Lai Vietnam: Kill All Villagers RPG...

So, back to the question. Can games be used to explore social events? Yes! Games are like film are like theater are like books.

But should games be used to explore the darkness behind some events? Not everybody agrees: games are not like film. Games are interactive and immersive (as many people point out). While a movie like "American History X" can explore tough issues, it's a movie meant for mature people to watch. Many people find the idea of "making Columbine into something playable" as "pushing the envelope too far" - especially when you consider the number of immature people who insist on playing games meant for mature audiences.

DUMB PEOPLE SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO PLAY ANY VIOLENT GAME. When Oedipus gouged out his eyes in "Oedipus the King" the Greeks wept, but when the Jews were gassed in "Schindler's List" some of my classmates laughed and cheered. Imagine how much they'll enjoy SCMRPG.

When blood splatters across the screen when playing a game, why do some people cheer, whoop, and demand more? Are they cheering for more blood? Or are they appreciative of the realism of the game? Those are two different things.

At QJ, blood on the screen makes us wince, appreciate the realism, and go on playing with grim determination. Violence in a game adds to realism. They make us value the character's life (because the character is "more real"), not back down from a challenge, do our best to solve a puzzle, and promise to not give up - positive values.

We can handle SCMRPG and play it maturely. Some of you readers know you can. But is America and the rest of the world ready for SCMRPG? If only there was a way to ban immature sociopaths from going near media, then there wouldn't be a need to ban "dirty" games or movies or whatever.

The game itself. One scene in SCMRPG has Cassie Bernal (she was asked "Do you believe in God?" before she was shot). We can look at this and have a grown-up discussion about how some Christian groups made the Columbine massacre proof that non-Christians are prone to violence. We can look at this and discuss the serious psychological and social issues behind Columbine.

We can also look at this and say, "If I had a family member who was shot, do I really want a game of that event?" or "Why would you take something so tragic and shove it in people's faces as if it was a joke?"

Many people say the game shows great care in treating the subject matter without making it into a violent farce. But many of these same people say the game should never have been made or that the developer Danny Ledone should have picked a different topic.

this made me cry...

Conclusion. The pixels of Eric and Dylan going around killing kids are pixels. Games are shadows. If we shadows have offended, think of this and all is mended: that you have but slumbered here while these visions did appear, and this weak and idle theme, no more yielding but a dream, gentles, do not reprehend.

But some do reprehend. And they have a right to. Is it too soon for this kind of game? Or should games like this never be made? Tough questions.

...but, is it any more right, than if someone were to write a book, or make a film of it. Just because you interac with it doesnt make it any different. The whole point of this game is to show the events as they were, show that serious media can be portrayed in a game and to both as films to this effect are designed, to entertain, inform and make the person partaking think, yes, people will be offended, and some may consider it insensitive, but how's that different from any film of this kind? Or indeed book?

» it depends on role play

which side are you on? Are you playing as the children trying to escape the psycho-murderers, or are you the two boys trying to kill everyone?

If you were playing as the good side (not the psycho-holocaust-reenactment kids), then i can see this as a game that could be allowed... but since it's probably the other way around, it shouldn't have even been made.

Playing the villain in a make-believe story is fine, playing the villain in a real life history portrayal (especially one as sick as this one was) is just immoral and unjustifiably WRONG.

» If video games are like film...

That's fine, I'm willing to accept that games are like film, to a point. You also have to take into account that the player actually ASSUMES the role of someone in the story rather than watching as a third party, as one does when watching a film. Still, I'm willing to accept that games and films are somewhat in the same vein.

And yes, films were made about 9/11 and Columbine, but that doesn't validate that it's okay to make games about it. It doesn't even validate that it's okay to make films about it.

Personally, I'm disgusted that two (that come to my mind immediately, there might be more) 9/11 movies were made within five years of the tragedy. I mean dammit, can't hollywood leave this crap alone? I don't care what the motive behind the movies were, have some goddamn reverance and respect and don't touch this subject for at least a little longer than that.

Maybe certain subjects are just meant to be left the hell alone. Columbine? I personally NEVER want to see a game about that. What possible benefit could that serve that one can't get from researching the subject on their own? No, video game and movie companies do not need to be making money off the grieving of recent tragedies. They make plenty of money making fart jokes and emulating fake violence, they do NOT need to dip their grubby little paws into the blood of the victims for a quick buck.

Just leave it alone! There's no need for a Columbine game. Some things don't need to be paraded shamelessly in mainstream media, and Columbine and 9/11 are examples. Do you absolutely NEED to make movies and games about them? This generation experienced it first hand, there's nothing you can tell us that's of any use to us at all. Again, have some reverance and respect for the people that died in those tragedies, and Leave. It. Alone.

ha...haha HA HA HA HA.

Idiot american. "9/11 was so tragic, boo hoo."

Shut your *****ing mouth you *****in cow. I live in canada, and am ashamed to live to close to such a disgusting country. All you people do ( yes this includes many canadians, and others from many other countries ) is cry, cry for no reason. For the past 20 years, we have all been living in a sureal time of peace. You prospered, there was no epidemic in your community. There was no war to live through. There was nothing wrong, you all just lived each day doing absolutly NOTHING that would benifit this world.

Now after a MEASILY POINTLESS LIFES were snuffed out, you cry and blame others for it. This 'war' as many call it was due. What were we doing before this 'war'? Nothing. Now that we have a 'war' as your country calls it, we may be doing something worth while in the long run.

STOP CRYING ABOUT Meaning less crap.

Who the hell do you think you are calling someone you hardly know a cow just because he lives in a country you obviously despise? What kind of human being are you to call the slaughter of many innocent peoples' lives meaningless? You wouldn't say that s.hit if your family were in that plane or in one of those buildings. You're less than s.hit and a disgrace to your peaceful country.

please ban games like Call of Duty, Empire Earth or any history based-upon reality games from the shelves since people got killed for real.. get a life

 » many points

i've never played the columbine game, frankly don't care to.

nothing should ever be banned, responsible people act accordingly.

who are the bad guys? the killers, or the parents who failed to teach their children right from wrong, or maybe the self centered tools who made these kids think this was a good option? no one is innocent here, there is enough blame to go around.

i think the thing most people take issue with is the fact that you empathize, to a certain extent, with the protagonist you play. maybe that isn't such a bad idea, show people the kind of stuff that drives people to do this ***** so the understand and can help stop it.

i thought of killing many many people in HS, it's a good thing (for them and me) i have better judgement than that. thanks mom and dad.

people want to ban or hide what they don't want to deal with and we end up with kids shooting their classmates. parents are going to have to wake up and take responsibility or it's only going to get worse.

we've had atleast 2 mothers in the US in the last 2 years claim god ordered them to kill their children.... responsibility is now on the shoulders of those who don't deserve it and people seem happy until something *****ing stupid happens, and then they want to know "why?"

that's probably why i would not play it.

"Christian groups made the Columbine massacre proof that non-Christians are prone to violence. "

what the hell is that?
you don't see me going around on killing sprees. and i would say it's the other way around. the crusades anyone?

personally i am not aginst any games however, this game would probably not be accepted beacause some stupid emo kid would pic it up and get an idea and start killing people and, of course, the tendency of people to overdramatize a game like this.
woah that looks like a run on doesn't it?

ciao

 » it's senseless

i'll tell you my objection to this game, the look and feel of it is like some cartoon but it's dealing with real life tragedy. in my opinion something (film/game/book/painting) should only be made if it shows due reverence to the subject matter and does not trivialise it... making it into a 'game' is dodgy to begin with, 'games' are for play and no one would seriously advocate playing with the lives of innocent people - which is almost what this game does do.

also, why do it?
if you want to court controversy can't you go after something which doesn't involve many heartbroken families?
