Now you can say "science made me do it!" A new study from the Yale University School of Medicine shows that, when roughed up by trying times and faced with negative emotions, men are more prone to crave alcohol than women. When faced with the same stresses, women were shown to express it vocally rather than go for the nearest mug. This could, however, result in depression and anxiety disorders. The study also notes that men initially drink more than women on average, suggesting that beer has become a learned behavior that they turn back to when they're stressed out. Men also seem to get greater blood pressure response as a reaction to stress, but they don't feel increased sadness or anxiety. Women, on the other hand, tend to dwell on the negative emotions. Unlike men, which the study shows to drink and forget when faced with stress, women think about their negative emotional state "over and over again." This is better than the alternative though: a previous study showed that women are more prone to alcohol-caused brain damage than men, and that they experience cell death during withdrawal. But what's with all this stress and alcohol? Pick up a video game instead. |
