X360, PS3 and WiiThe PlayStation 3 may not have had the best start in 2006 in terms of its launch, with the next generation console from Sony taking the number three spot in terms of sales in the North American territory. The Wii and Xbox 360 have also been reported to have sold more units between November and December than the PS3.

According to a Dublin-based market research firm though, the PS3 may have lost the Christmas 2006 battle, but the war is just beginning. The console war, that is.

The research firm says in its report titled, “The Transforming Global Video Games Market: The Emergence of Next Generation Gaming”, Sony will have 75 million PS3 consoles installed in homes around the world by the year 2010, fending off competition from Nintendo and Microsoft. Don't expect the Wii and 360 to do badly in the so-called "console wars" though, as the analysts predict that due to PAL (that's European to me and you) launch issues with the PS3 console it won't thrash the competition like the PS2 did in the last generation.

The Xbox 360's one year headstart has also given Microsoft a chance to run away with sales figures as its console drops in price and as its game range increases too. Of course, Market research involves a lot of speculation so do not take these predictions as fact. We'll only know that for sure in 2010.

They'll never be able to sell 75 million PS3s. A hell of a lot of the PS2s went to kids, and now they expect parents to pay $599, £425 or whatever currency you use? They're delusional if they believe that.

I think the best it'll do is tie with the Wii both ahead of the 360. But with the way the Wii's doing at the moment, that'd still be great for them.

Parents are paying 400 bucks for the 360, so why wont they pay 500? Also you would be stupid to think the ps3 wont have a price cut before next holiday season.

Parents May Buy a PS3 for Their Kids Because of Blu-ray..

» Double the price, half the sales!

Cheaper consoles have always sold better. That's why in past years the big 3 console makers released their consoles with the same price. Gameboy always sold much better than the lynx or game gear. Neo Geo and the 3D0 had pathetic sales despite being superior (although it's worth mentioning PS3 has in no way proven itself to be better.) They may sell 20 million consoles in its lifespan, but 75 million is just ridiculous. That research firm must take a lot of acid or something. Quite honestly everyone I know can afford one but don't want one. Resistence must be a good game to be worth $560 huh? There will be no PS3 price cut for 2-3 years, rd261, unless sales are horrible (very likely.)

 » WTF?

75 million consoles by 2010? It's ludicrus to think 18,750,000 Playstation 3s will sell per year. What do they smoke in Dublin? The PS2 sold what like 110 million? NO ONE I KNOW with a PS2 plans on getting a PS3.

haha what are you smoking? everyone i know who has a ps2 will be getting a ps3.
by 2010, ps3 will be the leaders, no doubt about that. 360 will be last and second will go to the wii with 30-40mil.

 » Listen

Perhaps to you it seems "ludicrus" that the PS3 can sell 75 million consoles. Thing is, people don't have to buy them, they just have to be bought. In other words, as long as a retailer buys them to sell them, it counts as a sell to Sony.

If every store carries 5 PS3's, you just need around 3 million stores selling 5 PS3 per year. That seems quite manageable. Also, stores usually carry more than 5 consoles, so that was your reality check.

So you're saying stores will keep buying PS3s and stockpiling millions and millions even though few will sell? Read the name, it's what I'm all about.

Actually I don't know anybody with an original XBOX. Honestly I wasn't too impressed with that system although I liked the hard drive and better graphics than PS2.
Everyone I know with a PS2 agrees sony turned its back on gamers. You could argue PS3 is the best system ever (hardware wise at least.) Problem is, very little effort was put into everything else. The game linup is possibly the worst ever for a new system. That shows no sign of improving any time soon. Most of the upcoming titles are XBOX 360 hand me downs from 9 months ago! While the online service is free (for now,) I am skeptical how long can it go on, or if PS3 becomes popular how can they pay for necessary server upgrades. Almost nonexistant customer support, advertising everywhere, and no unified friends list or common username and password for all games mean there's more problems than necessary. Japan is the only region that will save sony's game division.

» Same thing people said about the PS2

Its started at a high price and dropped, right now the PS2 still sells really well because its cheap.

Sometime in 2007 once components are cheaper to manufacture, we can expect a price drop, probably near the 2007 holiday season at the end of the year.

Don't underestimate the PS3, its not just appealing to gamers anymore, its drawing tons of attention as a blue-ray player alone.

All home theater reviews show the PS3 to blow the competition in price, features, picture quality, speed and TV compatibility. A $500 PS3 is the best blue-ray player on the market against others which cost $600+.

I know alot of people who are looking into the PS3 for a movie player because its the cheapest Blue-ray player on the market and will keep the kids happy.

The PS3 will sell well over 50 Million by 2010, while the Xbox360 will probably reach at tops 40 million by the end of its life, the Wii will probably do extremely well because of its target audience and price.

   Re: ABC (Unregistered) - 2007-01-03
 » Sure

"Its started at a high price and dropped, right now the PS2 still sells really well because its cheap."

But that 'high' price was only $299 at launch, not $499/$599. And after effectively killing support for the Dreamcast with ridiculous hype/lies (and therefore destroying the DC), the PS2 had the games market all to itself for 15/18 months before the arrival of the GC and XBox. Hence it built up huge momentum with BOTH developers and gamers before the competition arrived.

This is not the case for the PS3, so I wouldn't expect a repeat of the PS2. I still think it could finish first at the end of this gen, but if so only barely ahead of the 360, with the Wii close behind in third.

"All home theater reviews show the PS3 to blow the competition in price, features, picture quality, speed and TV compatibility. A $500 PS3 is the best blue-ray player on the market against others which cost $600+."

Which is all well and good, except in terms of movie quality, it seems to be HD-DVD leading at the moment over Blu-ray (check out numerous video/audio specialist websites).

"The PS3 will sell well over 50 Million by 2010, while the Xbox360 will probably reach at tops 40 million by the end of its life"

I bet you were on your knees praying for that to happen when you wrote that. ;)

You mentioned the PS2 still sells well because it's cheap, but I believe it's much more than that. Gamers associate the name 'Playstation' with gaming (it used to be 'Nintendo'), and the PS2's huge success means it has a massive library of games, including many exclusives, and there are still new games in developement to keep PS2 gamers excited (such as God of War 2).

None of this would have been possible without the games, and last gen, the PS2 was the lead console for most game developement, including multi-platform games (since the PS2 was harder to program and the market leader, it made sence to focus on the PS2 version first).

This time around, the 360 is the lead console for most multi-platform games, because it's currently the market leader for the new generation, it's easier to develop games and has better developement tools. Also, many one time Playstation exclusives are now coming to the 360, with the most recent announcement being VF5 (remember how gamers argued this will not happen?), and rumours of many other games including MGS4, DMC4 and recently Tekken 6 (yes, I know they're all rumours, but it does demonstrate a shift compared to last gen). And there are time exclusives like the GTA series which will now be released at approximately the same time for both PS3 and 360.

So don't expect a simple repeat of last gen between the consoles. Things are different now, therefore it will be interesting to see what happens.

This time next year we'll have a much better idea of the success of each console, so let's wait and see.

 » Ugh....Its ABC....Again

This is starting to Be Boring...

I,l Use Key-Points to make it Easier and Clear..

1)The PS3 between the Other 3 Systems,Uses the Highest Technology and the Most Expensive Components...this Means 2 Things:

a)it will have a Very High Production Cost [Initially]...and will Be the Hardest To Produce

b)on the other Hand....it means it will be the fastest system to drop in Cost and Price...Since it Uses very New Technolgies like [Blu-ray,Cell processor,Bluetooth,HDMI port..etc]...these are very Expensive Components now...But they will Greatly drop in cost in one year as they are more Mass-Produced...[Blu-ray just arrived this year]...and costs very much to produce...but come next year its manufacturing cost will drop Greatly [as with every new technology]...same for CELL...its new and have a very high-production cost....come next year..[as it enters more applications]...it will drop greatly in cost..same for the HDMI port...which is very new....as it become more mainstream it will become much Cheaper..same for Bluetooth and for every Next-gen Component of the PS3

This means the PS3 may cost a lot at Launch....But Come next-year....It will Be the Fastest to Drop in Cost and Price.....The means Sony will be able to make the most significant Price-cuts....and sony in the end...is Leading Technology Company....[Cost-reducing is one of its main Professions]..

On the Other Hand...Microsoft will have a hard time to Cost-reduce that [Aging DVD drive] or that [Ancient VGA port]....[these are already Cheap Components] that cannot Significantly Drop in Cost..the system is mostly Based on Current-Gen....this allow for a low-cost manufacture initially.....but it wont drop much in Cost..since [its already Cheap] and really cant Become anymuch Cheaper...Also...MS is a Software Company..not a technology one...it cant Compete with Cost-reduction against Sony...

The Bottom-Line: The PS3 at launch is the Highest Cost System and hardest to Produce....But it will be the Fastest to Drop in Price as Its new Components [BLU-ray,CELL,HDMI PORT,Bluetooth..] Drop in Cost like every new tecnology.....Combine this with the Arrival of MGS4..FFXIII and FFXIII Versus...GT5..The new Team ICO project [God...give me another Shadow of the Collosus]...and Lair....and this will be the Best time for the 100 million PS2 owners to Upgrade to a PS3.....

That is All....God...i hope i wont have to say the same things Again :I

"Anyone Planning on Replying....DO-NOT-USE-RUMOURS-AND-SPECULATIONS-IN-YOUR-REPLIES"
Only broken pu*sy can use rumors and speculation huh?
Seriously what you said makes no sense whatsoever. Higher technology always costs much more. Older technology continues to get cheaper always. Take CD players for instance. You can buy a CD player for $10 nowadays. That may be as cheap as they get, but since the mid 80s, prices have gone down every year. It was kinda old technology in the mid '90s, but prices continued to go down. So your point is what?
$ony has not and will not announce a price cut until sales go down, simple business. With the money they are losing, it COULD happen in the next 2 years if sales continue to be disappointing and they somehow lower their manufacturing costs. If you don't think sales will be dissapointing, just go to the store and you can probably find a PS3 on the shelf only 6 weeks after launch and less than a million sold worldwide!

   Re: ABC (Unregistered) - 2007-01-03
» Yes it's me, now try making sense in your post.

"Ugh....Its ABC....Again"

Hehehe.

Your post is nothing but wishful thinking. The PS3 can have the largest drop in price overall because it's the most expensive console, but how quickly that will happen remains to be seen, just as how price drops for the 360 remains to be seen.

Even if manufacturing costs reduce rapidly, it will be up to both companies to decide WHEN and by HOW MUCH the console will drop in price (you seem to think it will be passed onto the consumer straight away :|).

The price drop is also determined by other factors such as sales. Hence last gen, the PS2 was more expensive than the XBox (I'm in the UK) because there was little reason for Sony to drop the PS2 price when the console was selling so well at it's higher price, whereas Microsoft needed to drop the XBox below the PS2 price to help stimulate sales.

The Idea of the Article not to Confirm if Sony [will] Make the Biggest and fastest Price-Cuts..

The Idea is to Confirm That Sony [CAN] Make the Biggest Price-cuts..and this Would Be a huge Advantage For Sony....

"Quiet a Disappointing Reply...ABC"

Naturally, I disagree. ;)

"The Idea is to Confirm That Sony [CAN] Make the Biggest Price-cuts..and this Would Be a huge Advantage For Sony...."

If you read my post, you'll see that I do not dispute the fact that Sony should be able to make the biggest cuts overall, I'm just disputing the TIME scale you quote!. I'm saying prices will drop for both consoles, but we have no idea how fast because there are many factors involved.

So for all we know, as gamers, we may see no PS3 price cut next year, or we will see one at the end of the year, with the same being true for the 360.

Maybe the premium PS3 will drop from $599 to $450, but then maybe the premium 360 will drop from $399 to $299 or even less.

So let's wait and see shall we.

"By the way...Plz....tell the Kid above you not to reply to my Posts.....Hes Embarrasing :I"

Nah, you can tell him yourself. ;)

Re: Mr. Common Sense (Unregistered) - 2007-01-03
 » .

I'm happy I'm embarassing you, broken zero. FYI, I'm 27 and have been playing games since I was 8. I know a lot about business and the games industry.
Back to topic, the only time price cuts are announced are when sales are poor and manufacturing losses are not significant or a profit is made on hardware sales.
Microsoft makes a profit on the XBOX 360 but sales are still good, so the price is mostly the same as launch (the premium now usually comes with another controller or game.)
The PS3 just came out and although sales aren't spectacular, there's still $130 being lost on each one sold. There will only be a price drop after sales decline and manufacturing costs are significantly reduced. If you think this will happen next year, you know nothing. Sony can't keep taking a loss on consoles for long because they already have debt problems.

 » not rumor and speculation

the gaming world is evolving and it is only a matter of time before everybody goes for the most powerful console and support it. im not saying the less powerful will die instantly, they will have their fare share. since LCD TV's are becoming more common to all households and it supports 720p and higher most gamers would want to pair it with something pretty. microsoft cant still touch even half the sales of the big N & S in japan so thats a major downside to becoming the Next Gen leader. as of now i see Wii covering all markets, so in just few months it'll reach the base of X360. the PS3 road is very narrow, but eventually due to Name and capability of the system, it will the system of choice after a few years, like dvd's people will eventually want movies on 1080p (the psp was a good freebie on the psp but a lot dont realize that its free). the x360 did a good job coming out a year before others do, it gave them big HW/SW base, so they already earned what they needed and can still compete for more due to its capability. as of now price is the selling point of the console purchase, and wii delivers in these part but when the price gap comes close, around 200-400, we will start to see the big revolution on console gaming sales. software games mattered on launch but this coming year we will be having a barage of AA titles and exclusives, so this will be the next console purchase reason. whichever console gets the most number of exclusives will have a prosperous year.

I plan on getting a ps3 here, when I get my taxes, and prolly a wii a couple months later, and finally the xbox later when its cheaper so I can play the exclusive games I want to play...

guys.. stop the (my console is better than yours) cause the truth is, all 3 are gonna be on the market for some time with all 3 having great games made for their system. if you can afford it, get another system later on and catch up on the good games, heck I just played/beat god of war and just started shadows of the collosus lol, as long as its not online mainly, you can wait and still have fun playing years after it came out.

Honestly the one game on playstation3 that I would play the most if I had one right now?.. GRAND TURISMO HD DEMO seriously.. I might buy resistance and another game, but most of my time would be on the free demo. By the way where are you guys seeing these ps3's at.. i know its a matter of luck being at the store at the right time.. but I still havent seen one yet at gamers, gamestop and wall mart.. Im in omaha, NE by the way... not sure if its a regional thing or im going to the wrong stores.
