Study: U.S. women more tech-savy then men, also more likely to own a PSP - Image 1 In the 21st century, gone is the stereotype that the realm of electronic geekdom is strictly for dudes. Such was the premise of a recently released study by the Solutions Research Group, indicating that today's women are outdoing their male counterparts with regards to tech-savviness.

This research is based on a total 2,025 trending interviews taken between October 2007 to February of this year. The sample target of these interviews were designed to represent the regional, age and ethnic make-up of the country's female online population.

The study also divided up the women sub-groups according to their life stages: young singles, moms with young kids, moms with tweens/teens, and empty nesters. So, where do the gals outdo the guys? SRG's study indicates that women clocked in higher percentages of usage when it came to Digital Video Recorders (DVR), social media (eg. Facebook, MySpace), and casual gaming.

The study also indicated that women were more likely than men to own a Sony PSP; their other choice consoles included the PS2, the Game Boy, the Xbox, The N64, and the DS. Here's a lowdown of the study's other interesting results:
  • Women tend to use their DVRs 9.3 times per week, as compared to the 8.3 times per week averaged by the men.
  • Women in who played PC Games last month averaged 70 percent, as compared to 69 percent by the men.
  • African-Americans are particularly interested in console gaming, with two out of three playing.
  • Around 42 percent of the female subjects are into online social networking, as compared to the men's 41 percent. by comparison, women averaged just 30 percent the year before.
  • Men are 1.5 to 2 times more likely to engage in movie and TV show downloads (ie. iTunes) than women.
  • Women whose kids have already grown up and left the home are more likely to then the rest of the women and the men to go online shopping.
  • Women are more likely to transfer photos from their digital cameras to their PCs. Men are more likely to transfer songs from their PC to a portable player.
The study also listed sort of electronics the women in the study groups tended to have/want.
  • Digital cameras (24 percent)
  • Cell phones (23 percent)
  • Game consoles/handhelds (19 percent)
  • Digital media players (14 percent)
  • Laptop (14 percent)
  • GPS navigation unit (10 percent)
That said, we advise the readers that this is just taken from a sample population - there will always be exceptions to the rule. Here's to hoping you enjoyed this recent bit of insight.
That, and it certainly makes it easier to figure out what to get our significant other for their birthday: Get 'em whatever you're having!
